COLLEGE CONNECTIONS: Stoller sets pair of new records

GOSHEN — Sophomore Nathaniel Stoller (Northridge) set two pool records for Grand Valley State in a 188-112 men’s swimming win over Indianapolis in Allendale, Michigan.

Stoller finished first in the 100-yard butterfly, setting a new pool mark of 50.46. He teamed with sophomore Milan Medo (Bratislava, Slovakia), junior Michael Griffith (Brighton, Michigan) and junior Erik Aakesson (Loeddekoepinge, Sweden) for a first in the 200 freestyle relay in another pool record time of 1:23.50.

Men’s Swimming

Louisville senior Alex Burtch (Concord) was part of a 400-yard freestyle relay that set a pool record of 2:57.08 in a 193-107 home loss to Indiana University. Burtch turned in a time of 44.07 for his leg while sophomore Caryle Blondell had a 43.87, senior Samuel Hoekstra 44.71 and junior Joao DeLuca 44.43. Burtch also finished fifth in the 200 free (1:40.56).

Women’s Swimming

Louisville freshman Brittany Robinson (Wawasee) placed second in the 100-yard butterfly (55.41) and third in the 100 backstroke (56.00) as the Cardinals dropped a 160-140 home decision to the Indiana Hoosiers. Robinson was just out-touched in the fly by Haley Lips of Indiana (55.25).

Fordham sophomore Spencer Chappell (Northridge) finished first in the 100-yard backstroke (59.41) as the Rams posted a 176-120 win over the University of Massachusetts.

Ball State junior Emily Wisolek (Northridge) placed fourth in the 200-yard freestyle (1:54.33) and in the 500 free (5:08.14) as the Cardinals lost to Miami 175-104 in a Mid-American Conference meet in Oxford, Ohio.

Franklin college sophomore Brenna Ghigliotto (Northwood) won the 200-yard freestyle (2:03.46) and the 100 breaststroke (1:09.95) as the Grizzlies finished third in the Heartland Invitational.

Women’s Track and Field

Ball State freshman Becca Kropf (Fairfield) placed fourth in the 400 meters (1:02.50) in the Indiana Wesleyan Invitational. She also teamed with sophomore Katie Behrendt (Chesterton), sophomore Lindsay Wallace (Burlington, Ontario) and junior Hannah Lange (Martinsville) for a fourth in the 4 x 200 relay (1:48.91) and a fourth in the 4 x 400 relay (4:05.40).

Indiana Wesleyan freshman Lauren Stutzman (Goshen) qualified for the NAIA National Championships with a leap of 17-8 in the long jump at the IWU Invitational in Troyer Fieldhouse in Marion.

The Eastern Mennonite distance medley relay of freshman Juni Schirch (Goshen, sophomore Lanae Krieder (Harrisonburg, Virginia), freshmen Chafin Brumfield (Harrisonburg, Virginia) and Jolee Paden (St. Joseph, Illinois) broke the school record with a time of 13:17.28 at the Hilton Garden Invitational in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Anderson freshman Janell Bender (Westview) finished third in the 3,000 meters (11:57) and sophomore Desiree Maran (Goshen) seventh (12:06) for the Ravens in the Defiance Invitational.

Manchester senior Karla Madrigal (Elkhart Central) teamed with junior Brittany Schuler (Fort Wayne), sophomores Sarah Stahl (Montpelier, Ohio) and Brianna Martinez (Schereville) to win the distance medley relay (13:14.28) at Anderson University’s Raven Invitational.

Men’s Track and Field

Indiana Wesleyan junior Andrew Albert (Northridge) won the one-mile run in a field of 29 runners at the IWU Invitational in Troyer Fieldhouse in Marion. His time of 4:21.9 is an NAIA National Championship qualifying time.

Women’s Basketball

Senior Ashlee Ort (Wawasee) totaled six points, seven rebounds, three assists and a steal for the Bethel Pilots in a 52-49 Crossroads League loss to Saint Francis.

The Indiana University South Bend Titans defeated Calumet College 54-41. Senior Leah Meyer (Northridge) had two points and seven rebounds, junior Lauren Adams (Northridge) four points, two rebounds and a steal and freshman Sydney Sample (Northridge) two points for the Titans.

Junior Emma Stahl (Jimtown) dished out four assists for the Indiana Wesleyan Wildcats in a 72-48 Crossroads League win over Spring Arbor.

Ferris State junior Sarah DeShone (Jimtown) tossed in 20 points as the Bulldogs dropped an 83-73 decision to Grand Valley State. DeShone made 7-of-14 field goals (1-of-4 from 3-point range) and 5-of-5 free throws. She also grabbed five rebounds to go with two assists and five steals.

Men’s Basketball

Senior Ethan Hussey tossed in 17 points for the Saint Francis Cougars in an 80-79 Crossroads League win at Bethel College in Mishawaka. His trey with 7.6 seconds left to put Saint Francis up 78-75. Hussey made 5-of-10 field goal attempts, including 3-of-4 from 3 point range, and 4-of-4 free throws. He also had two rebounds and three assists.

Freshman Riley Stichter (Wawasee) had four points, a rebound, a steal and a block; junior Shane Cook (Jimtown) two points, an assist and a steal and freshman Joe Godfread (Elkhart Central) six rebounds and five blocks for the Indiana University South Bend Titans in an 82-43 win over Calumet College. It was the 17th win of the season for the Titans.

Junior Josh Riikonen (Elkhart Central) totaled two points, seven rebounds and a blocked shot for the Taylor Trojans in a 55-45 win over Marian in Crossroads League action.

Junior Michael Kibiloski (Elkhart Memorial) netted 12 points for the Indiana Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodons in an 86-79 loss to Omaha. Kibiloski hit 4-of-7 field goals (1-of-3 from 3-point range) and 3-of-4 free throws.
