SPECIAL TO THE GOSHEN NEWS
Local highlights were limited Saturday in a wrestling regional at the Goshen High School gym.
Forrest Glogouski, 120-pound junior from Fairfield, and NorthWood 182-pound senior Zach Telschow were only champions from the immediate area.
Glogouski, now with a 37-0 record, was a 6-0 winner over Jimtown junior Konner Chafin.
Telschow captured a thrilling 9-7 decision in the 182-pound finale over Elkhart Memorial senior Kain Jenkins. The Panther standout now has a 32-3 record.
“At the beginning of the season, I was just hoping to make it through the sectional,” said Telschow. “But then a switch just seemed to come on and I thought it best to strive for something like a regional championship. This is the third week in a row I have gone against Kain and he is a great wrestler.”
The East Noble Knights breezed to the team crown with 185 points, followed by Elkhart Memorial at 141 and Jimtown 116.
The top four finishers in each weight class advance to the semistate next Saturday at the Allen County Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne.
EN is sending nine wrestlers to the semistate, Memorial and Northridge both seven, Fairfield and Jimtown both five, Goshen four, Fremont and DeKalb both three, West Noble, Elkhart Central, Westview and Central Noble two each, NorthWood, Angola, Prairie Heights, Lakeland and Concord one each.
Fairfield freshman Blake Glogouski was second and Goshen junior Scotty Huff third at 106; Concord junior DeLawrence Gayfield second and Westview senior Brian Mullett fourth at 113; Fairfield senior Brett Martz second and Northridge senior Devin Puckett fourth at 126; West Noble sophomore Taylor Grim third and Fairfield junior Trevor Yoder fourth at 132.
Northridge junior Ryan Baxter was fourth at 138; Northridge senior Tim Deters second and Goshen senior Travis Pickard fourth at 152; Fairfield junior Morgan Crosby fourth at 160; Goshen junior Evan Smith third and Northridge senior Scott Kasten fourth at 170.
Westview senior Taylor Warren was fourth at 182; West Noble senior Zach Goodyear second and Northridge senior McKenna Malcom fourth at 195; Northridge senior Chris Connell third at 220; Goshen senior Hayden Schmucker third and Northridge junior Lucas Wickey fourth at 285.
There was a scary moment in a 152-pound semifinal when Goshen’s Pickard, wrestling against the Raiders’ Deters, suddenly crumpled to the mat. He was transported to Goshen General Hospital for examination.
“They took X-rays and say I had cartilage tear away from a rib,” said Pickard. “They gave me some medication and told me to get a lot of rest. They said I could try wrestling against next week, as long as I could tolerate it.”
Fairfield junior Tony Zook, fifth at 152, would be the alternate going to Fort Wayne if Pickard is unable to compete.
Jim Jones, coach of the Falcons, said, “We brought seven wrestlers in here and have five or maybe six moving on. Forrest Glogouski was great and is now a two-time regional champion. He is totally focused and on a quest. He had a tough battle with an opponent he is very familiar with. All our kids gave everything they had. We scored more points than any NECC team.”
Redskin coach Jim Pickard said, “Things went about as we expected. Several of our kids had tough draws since they were third or fourth at sectional and then our best hope for a champion (Travis) gets injured.
