SPECIAL TO THE GOSHEN NEWS
Goshen’s highlight came in the last of 182 matches Saturday of a wrestling sectional at Memorial High School.
Redskin senior Hayden Schmucker pinned Northridge junior Lucas Wickey in 3:11 for the heavyweight title, improving his record to 32-6.
Other local champions were Fairfield freshman Blake Glogouski at 106, Concord junior DeLawrence Gayfield at 113, unbeaten Fairfield junior Forrest Glogouski at 120, Northridge senior Tim Deters at 152 and NorthWood senior Zach Telschow at 182,
The top four finishers in each weight class advance to a regional next Saturday at Goshen High School, starting at 9 a.m.
Schmucker said, “Wickey was quicker than I expected. I had some weight advantage and tried to ride him out. I’ve worked a lot on conditioning this year and tried to improve my riding time.”
Forrest Glogouski, boosting his record to 34-0 while winning a third straight sectional crown, captured a 10-3 decision over Jimtown junior Conner Chafin for 120 honors.
Glogouski said, “I’ve wrestled him before and you can’t take anyone lightly at this level. I just try to score as many points as possible. Decisions and technical falls are good too. I’m proud of my brother Blake. Hopefully, he will continue to follow in my footsteps.”
Blake Glogouski, now 31-3, pinned Goshen junior Scotty Huff in 2:20 for first place at 106.
Gayfield of Concord was a 7-2 winner over Memorial sophomore Tony Vaughn, improving his record to 31-1.
Northridge’s Deters improved to 28-6 by pinning Memorial junior Chris Morris in 4:49 at 152 while NorthWood’s Telschow is now 29-3 after a 9-3 verdict over Memorial senior Kain Jenkins at 182.
Memorial won the team championship with 217.5 points, followed by Jimtown 207, Goshen 190.5, Northridge 176.5, Fairfield 168, NorthWood 114, Central 77.5 and Concord 51.
Memorial advances 11 wrestlers to the regional, Jimtown and Goshen both 10, Northridge nine, Fairfield seven, NorthWood four, Central three and Concord two.
Goshen coach Jim Pickard said, “We had some kids lose tough matches and that’s going to happen. Then, things just caught up with some of our younger wrestlers.
“Hayden Schmucker did a great job and just needs to keep wrestling his best. We had a tough second round, which killed us team-wise, but we have 10 kids going to the regional and can’t complain about that.”
Fairfield coach Jim Jones said, “I’m certainly happy for our two champions. I can’t remember Fairfield brothers winning on the same day, unless it would have been the Hofers back in the 1970s. I thought we might have a couple more in the finals, but it doesn’t always work out how you plan.”
Local performers joining Wickey and Huff as sectional runnersup were Fairfield senior Brett Martz at 126, Northridge junior Ryan Baxter at 138, NorthWood senior Caleb Reeve at 145, Fairfield junior Morgan Cosby at 160, Northridge senior McKenna Malcom at 195 and Northridge senior Chris Connell at 220.
Goshen senior Nick Cox at 113, Fairfield junior Trevor Yoder at 132, Goshen freshman Christian Horton at 138, Goshen sophomore LeAndro Rodriguez at 145, Goshen senior Travis Pickard at 152, Northridge senior Scott Kasten at 170, Goshen junior Ramiro Hernandez at 182 and NorthWood senior Dan Guevara at heavyweight were among third-finishers.
