Brown leads Miami past Notre Dame 71-64

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) — Miami ended its home conference drought and denied the opposing coach a milestone victory.

Rion Brown scored 21 points to lead Miami to a 71-64 victory over Notre Dame on Wednesday night.

The Hurricanes (13-13, 4-9 Atlantic Coast Conference) built a 15-point lead early in the second half and withstood a late Irish rally in the final minute.

The conference win was Miami's first at home this season after six previous losses.

"The main thing for me was that I didn't want to lose another home game," Brown said.

Notre Dame (14-13, 5-9) cut Miami's lead to 65-64 on Demetrius Jackson's layup with 22 seconds remaining.

Brown's two free throws with 21 seconds left put Miami ahead 67-64. Then Raphael Akpejiori added two free throws after he was fouled rebounding a Jackson miss.

"I just wanted to make them for our team so we could get the win," Brown said of his free throws. "That was the main thing on my mind."

Garrius Adams scored 14 points and Davon Reed finished with 12 points for the Hurricanes.

"I wanted to finish the game on a positive note," Miami coach Jim Larranaga said. "We made a couple of critical errors that gave them a chance to get back. And they also made a couple of terrific plays.

"We were able to get our guys to the foul line and they made their free throws."

The Irish rallied from a seven-point deficit with 57 seconds left and got to within 63-62 on consecutive 3-pointers from Pat Connaughton and Steve Vasturia.

Connaughton scored 22 points and made 6 of 7 3-pointers for Notre Dame.

"You've got to give a lot of credit to Miami," Irish coach Mike Brey said. "They got off to such a great start and played so well. But I'm really proud of our group. As ugly as it looked sometimes, for us to come back and make a game out of it."

Two decades after NASCAR started running at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the crowds have thinned considerably. It's probably no reflection on the sport's massive following, which stretches from coast to coast, but it surely doesn't NASCAR's image help when the cameras pan across all of those empty seats.
