PREP GIRLS TENNIS: Redskins deny Pilgrims in NLC

GOSHEN — After suffering their first NLC loss of the 2013 season last week — a 5-0 shutout at the hands of Northridge — Goshen High School’s girls tennis team was looking to continue its rebound Tuesday night against visiting Plymouth.

The Redskins did just that, topping the Pilgrims, 4-1 to improve to 8-1 overall (4-1 NLC).

Miranda Kay had one of the best performances on the afternoon for the Redskins, winning her No. 1 singles match, 6-3, 6-4 over Plymouth’s Allie Berger.

On a blustery day, Kay said the key to her victory was adapting her game to the gusty winds.

“You take something off your serve, and you hit safer shots,” Kay said. “Even with that, my serve was pretty good today.

Goshen coach Dan Love said his team is starting to play some of its best tennis of the season.

Which is a good thing, since the regular season concludes on Monday, with the NLC Tournament next week.

Love was especially pleased with the efforts of the  Redskins’ No. 1 doubles team of Emily Halley and Ali Peters, who won the first set of their match with Plymouth’s Marissa German and Andria Shook, 6-3, then dropped the second set, 6-2.

Halley and Peters were down 0-3 in the third set before rallying for a 6-4 win to take the match.

“That’s tennis,” Love said.

“There are momentum swings, and you hope you are on the right end of them.”

In other action Tuesday night, at No. 2 singles, Goshen’s Lisanne Scheffers bested Mikayla German, 6-2, 6-3.

At No. 3 singles, Goshen’s Sarah Rush topped Carly Berger, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3.

Plymouth’s No. 2 doubles tandem of Emily Blake and Ellen Smith earned the Pilgrims’ only match win of the day, defeating Leah Shetler and Kayci Troyer, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.

The Redskins return to action today when they host Elkhart Memorial in an NLC meet that was originally scheduled for Memorial.

Start time is scheduled for 5 p.m.

There has been discussion at West Goshen Elementary School to require mandatory student uniforms in the future. How do you feel about the prospect of mandatory student uniforms in a public school environment?

I think it’s an excellent idea that is way overdue
I think it’s a bad idea and would be restrictive for students and parents.
