COLLEGE FOOTBALL: Future Big Ten schedules unveiled

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — The 2017 Big Ten football season will provide Indiana with a test.

The Hoosiers will play five away conference that games that season. They open the season against Ohio State at home on Sept. 2, play their first Big Ten road game at Penn State on Sept. 30, then face Michigan in the next league game.

The Big Ten released football schedules for 2016 and 2017 on Thursday. The Hoosiers will have five home league games in 2016 and four in 2017.

In 2016, IU hosts Michigan State, Nebraska, Maryland, Penn State and Purdue and plays at Ohio State, Northwestern, Rutgers and Michigan. In 2017, the Hoosiers host the Buckeyes, Michigan, Wisconsin and Rutgers. They play at Penn State, Michigan State, Maryland, Illinois and Purdue.

Meanwhile, Purdue will play four home Big Ten football games during the 2016 season, the first time since 1984 the league will play a nine-game conference season.

The Boilermakers will host Iowa, Penn State, Northwestern and Wisconsin that season. They will open the conference season on Oct. 1 with their first game ever at Maryland, which joins the conference in 2014. Purdue also will play at Illinois, Nebraska, Minnesota and Indiana that season.

In 2017, Purdue will host Big Ten games against Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, Illinois and Indiana.
