LITTLE LEAGUE DISTRICT 14 TOURNAMENT: Goshen rallies

No. 2 9-10 squad tops Warsaw in bottom of sixth

GOSHEN — There are few things in baseball more exciting than a two-out rally, especially one that wins a game.

That was precisely what the Goshen 9-10 All-Stars No. 2 got Saturday afternoon as they rallied in the bottom of the sixth inning for a 13-12 victory over Warsaw No. 2.

After losing its tournament opener to Concord Friday night, 16-1, Goshen No. 2 has little room for error the rest of the way in pool play. With four games to play total, three wins are probably needed to advance.

Goshen No. 2 coach Nate Duell was pleased to see his team bounce back so quickly from a tough loss Friday night.

“Both teams were in pretty much the same situation,” Duell said. “We talked about forgetting that game and starting over today, and the kids were able to do that.”

A seesaw game saw both teams trade the lead several times, and headed into the bottom of the fifth, trailing 8-6, Goshen No. 2 got the first of its two-out rallies on the day. Dominick Reyes doubled and later scored on an error to cut the Warsaw No. 2 lead to 8-7. Goshen No. 2 got the tying run on a wild pitch and then got an RBI single from Brandon Rivera to take a 9-8 lead. Another run scored on a wild pitch for a 10-8 Goshen No. 2 advantage.

Warsaw No. 2 struck for four runs in the top of the sixth to go up 12-10.

Goshen No. 2 found itself down to its last out after opening the home half of the sixth with a pair of groundouts. Then the rally started. Reyes reached on an error, stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch. He scored on an Anders Revoir RBI single to cut the Warsaw lead to 12-11.

Revoir stole second and also later scored on a wild pitch, tying the game.

The winning run also scored on a wild pitch when Brayden Hinkle raced home.

Reyes had a pair of hits to help lead the Goshen No. 2 attack. Revoir had three hits, and Wyatt Hernsley gave Goshen No. 2 four strong innings of middle relief.

Goshen No. 2 returns to action today at 2 p.m. on the road at Middlebury, and then travels to Mishawaka Monday night at 6.

There has been discussion at West Goshen Elementary School to require mandatory student uniforms in the future. How do you feel about the prospect of mandatory student uniforms in a public school environment?

I think it’s an excellent idea that is way overdue
I think it’s a bad idea and would be restrictive for students and parents.
