GOSHEN — In tournament play especially, it’s a good idea to win your first game and get off on the right foot.

The Concord All-Stars did just that Friday night in their Little League District 14 9-10-year-old division opener against Goshen No. 2, scoring 12 runs in the first two frames en route to a 16-1 victory in a contest halted after four innings due to the 10-run rule.

The tournament begins with pool play: Four games over five days. The winners of each of the four pools advance to semifinal action July 11.

The small number of pool games makes it critical to get the win in your first game, according to Concord coach Kevin D’Arcy.

“We took a little while to get going tonight,” D’Arcy said.

“But we settled in at the plate during that second inning.”

Jack D’Arcy had two hits and three RBIs for Concord. Dalton Swinehart added a triple, and Ethan Smith had a pair of hits to go with three RBIs as well.

Kendall Swinehart started on the mound and retired all fix batters she faced over two innings with five strikeouts. Smith finished up on the hill for Concord.

Goshen No. 2 coach Nate Duell said the key for his squad will be putting Friday night’s game behind them.

“When we take the field tomorrow, the score is 0-0,” Duell said.

Goshen No. 2 returns to action today at 10 a.m. at home against Warsaw. Concord hosts Goshen No. 1, also at 10 a.m.
