---- — EAST LANSING, Mich. — Devin Gardner’s jersey and pants were soaked and soiled. He sat slumped on a bench, cloaked by a hooded overcoat.
He didn’t flinch when No. 24 Michigan State scored a touchdown with 2:43 left to finish the scoring in a 29-6 victory over No. 23 Michigan on Saturday.
Gardner was done for the day because his coaches and the team’s medical staff seemed to show some mercy for the beat-up quarterback after he was sacked seven times by the Spartans’ swarming defense.
“He got pounded a little bit,” Wolverines coach Brady Hoke said.
A little bit?
Gardner was knocked around and lost 46 yards. Michigan was driven back for a school-record minus-48 yards rushing.
