New Parmore owners getting a crash course

NEW PARIS — Not many business owners make the transition from restaurant owner to golf course owner.

But that’s just the change Jeremiah and Anne King of New Paris have made.

The couple have owned Dips and Dogs — the restaurant connected with Parmore Golf Course — for about the past 18 months.

They recently purchased the golf course also and are learning all about the new type of business they’ve taken over.

They found out the actual golf course was for sale at a garage sale thrown by the previous owners.

For Jeremiah King, operating first the restaurant, and now the restaurant and golf course is a side gig. He works full time at Keystone RV.

“I get about five hours of sleep a night these days,” King said with a smile.

The Kings made a major change when they took over the restaurant, switching from counter service to table service.

They also plan on changing the restaurant’s name from “Dips and Dogs” to “Annie’s Place.”

That change, King said with a laugh, is coming from the restaurant’s regular customers.

“Some of the older regulars keep calling Anne “Annie,” Jeremiah King said.  

But as far as the actual nuts-and-bolts of operating a golf course, the Kings have some top-shelf help in their corner: Longtime Parmore head professional Scott Schuster is staying on. Schuster has worked at Parmore since 1972. He retired last year as assistant professional at Black Squirrel Golf Club in Goshen, but also works part time at Plymouth Rock Golf Course in Plymouth.

Parmore is a nine-hole, par-29 course, with seven par-3 holes and two par-4s.

Greens fees at Parmore will remain the same for now, Schuster said: $9 for nine holes and $15 for 18.

Memberships are available, Schuster said, and he hopes to generate interest in leagues for both men and women at the course.

“We’re also going to have a fully stocked pro shop with Titleist golf balls and good golf clubs at an affordable price,” Schuster said.

For King, one of the biggest lessons to learn has been the actual day-to-day maintenance of the golf course itself.

“But I’ve got a background in landscaping, so that’s helping me a lot,”  King added.
