PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL: Redskins pull away from Chargers

GOSHEN — Sometimes, a team needs to battle some early adversity to find its groove.

That was the case Tuesday night for the Goshen girls basketball team, as the Redskins struggled early defensively against a scrappy West Noble team before pulling away late for a 76-58 victory in a nonconference contest.

With the win, Goshen improved to 6-1 on the young 2012-13 season.

West Noble dropped to 4-4.

Goshen coach Kenny Krebs said his team focused its defensive attention a big too much on Charger senior post Haley Richardson early.

“Credit to West Noble,” Krebs said. “They had some other players step up and hit some shots.”

One of those players was Kelsey Peterson, who led all scorers with 26 points.

The Redskins also struggled finding their offensive rhythym early, and trailed the Chargers 19-18 at the first stop.

That began to change early in the second stanza, as Goshen opened the period with a 7-0 run to take a 26-21 advantage,

The Redskins closed the half on a 16-6 surge to take a 38-27 lead into the locker room.

Goshen led by as many as 17 in the second half.

West Noble coach Dale Marano said his short-handed team — missing two players — nonethless came out with intensity.

“We got into foul trouble,” Marano said. “You can’t sent a good team like Goshen to the foul line that many times.”

The Redskins shot 73 percent from the charity stripe opn 27-of-37.

And, also a positive for Krebs, the Redskins outrebounded the Chargers, 42-20 — 20 of those boards coming on the offensive end. “We’ve been working a lot on our defense the last three days,” Krebs said.

Deja Felder led Goshen with 23 poitns. Aimee Swihart added 19 and Christina Gipson had 10.

Goshen was a 26-25 winner in the J.V. contest. Olivia Love led the J.V. Redskins with nine points and nine rebounds in just two quarters of action.

The Redskins return to action Friday night at Wawasee to open NLC play.

West Noble travels to Churubusco for an NECC contest, also Friday night.
