ELKHART COUNTY FAIR: Off and running

Harness racing program underway

Mya Tri. Mya Tri is a multiple winner of the Indiana Sire Stakes.

Velten Titanium drive by Lonnie Graber notched his first career victory in the sixth race.

Former Goshen resident Don Eash guided E R Rocketman to victory in the seventh race. Driver and horse waited until the three-quarter mile marker before taking the lead for the colt’s second career win.

“E R Rocketman is a pretty good colt,” Don Eash said. “We’ll just have to see how he develops. He looks to be the best of the two-year-old colt trotters that I have. Once the Indiana Sire Stakes start at Hoosier Park we will see how he does.

“It’s a busy day as I’m racing in Anderson tonight (Saturday) and this is a busy weekend.”

In one of the closer finishes of the day Short Skirt In Hi Heels driven by Jace Sundeen pulled away from Jailhouse Rayne guided by Peterson down the stretch in the ninth race. It was Short Skirt In Hi Heels’ third win of the season and of her career.

Saturday was a busy day as veteran track announcer Steve Cross called the first 11 races before he has to leave to be at Hoosier Park for the evening card there. Bill Peters of Ohio filled in form Cross on the last two races.

“We host a 14-race card at Anderson and it’s the first round of the Indiana Sire Stakes,” Cross said.

  • Pyrenees please Nibali, Rogers in Tour Stage 16 BAGNERES-DE-LUCHON, France — The Pyrenees on Tuesday lived up to their reputation for causing ups and downs at the Tour de France: A French rider climbed in the standings, an American went down, and an Australian rebounding from an ordeal of doping suspicions won Stage 16 in a downhill breakaway. Riding in his 10th Tour, three-time world champion Michael Rogers of Australia won his first Tour stage behind savvy racing, well-paced riding and the absence of his Tinkoff-Saxo Bank leader Alberto Contador. The Spaniard crashed out in Stage 10, inadvertently freeing up Rogers to go after the stage win.
