---- — GOSHEN — When you keep your opponent off the scoreboard in the opening quarter, you’ve made a nice down payment on winning a basketball game.
That’s just what the Goshen High School girls basketball team did Tuesday night at home, outscoring visiting Elkhart Central 12-0 in the opening stanza en route to a 42-28 win in a nonconference contest.
Goshen coach Lenny Krebs was pleased with his team’s defensive intensity through the first three and a half quarters — especially in the first frame.
“Any time you can get off to a 12-0 start, you have to feel pretty good about what you’re doing,” Krebs said. “Central is very quick and athletic, and we did a good job of handling their quickness and athleticism tonight.”
The Blue Blazers (1-5) did not crack the scoreboard until the 6:55 mark of the second quarter. Goshen led 23-9 at intermission.
The Redskins (4-1) pushed out to a 36-14 lead at the final stop.
The Blue Blazers outscored the Redskins 14-6 in the final eight minutes to make the score a bit more respectable — much of that scoring coming in the final four minutes, when Krebs felt his team lost some of the defensive intensity it had displayed all night long.
Still, Krebs was pleased overall with the effort from his young team, which has just three seniors.
Especially noteworthy for Krebs was his team’s aggressiveness on offense.
“We want to see that all the time, not just when we’re pressing,” Krebs said. “Tonight, we did a really good job of staying aggressive in our half-court offense.”
Senior guard Deja Felder led Goshen with 13 points. Freshman guard Ashton Ellis had 10 and senior forward Christina Gipson added eight.
The Redskins shot 40 percent from the field on the night (14-of-35).
Goshen held Central to 21 percent from the field (10-of-46).
Earlier, the J.V. Redskins were a 32-17 winner in the J.V. contest.
Sheyanne Rangel led Goshen with seven points. Alyssa Hershberger had six and Alexis Stevens added five.
Goshen returns to action Friday night when the Redskins host South Bend Riley. Central hosts South Bend St. Joseph on Thursday.
