PREP WRESTLING: Oh, so close

Goshen third in tight NLC Tournament field

SYRACUSE —  The Goshen Redskins, paced by three individual champions, placed third in the NLC wrestling meet Saturday at Wawasee High School, just 4 1/2 points out of second and eight out of first.

Elkhart Memorial totaled 226 points to take the team championship. Plymouth was second at 222 1/2, followed by Goshen 218, Northridge 177 1/2, Wawasee 112, NorthWood 107, Concord 74 and Warsaw 58.

“There were places where we could have been more competitive,” Goshen coach Jim Pickard said. “If we had we could have been right there. There were three or four weight classes where we took some matches off and that hurt us.

Goshen’s first champion was a 106 pounds when Scotty Huff posted a 9-3 decision over Cody Allmon of Plymouth.

“I knew what he (Allmon) wanted to do and worked through it,” Huff said. “I wanted to win so I could get the points for my team. At first I was nervous and then settled down when realizing my wrestling was OK.

“It feels great to win after finishing fourth a year ago. It’s nice to come out on top.”

Huff has a 31-5 record.

Goshen’s next champion was a 170 when Evan Smith pinned Jacob Pearson of Plymouth in 3:16.

“Staying patient and not trying to rush things made the difference,” Smith said. “I kept looking for what was there and not trying to do anything risky. The pin came with a bundle move. I ran a cross face and then sucked him in. He went over a lot easier than I was expecting.

“Pearson pinned me when we wrestled during the regular season.”

It was Smith’s first NLC championship. He improved his season record to 25-10.

Hayden Schmucker picked up Goshen’s other championship at 285 when he pinned Chad Eppley of Wawasee in 1:10.

“It was unexpected to get a pin that quick,” Schmucker said. “I was expecting to have to go the distance. He was a lot lighter and I kept my weight on him and wore him down.

“My goal coming in was to win my first two matches by pins and win the overall title. That is how it worked out.”

Schmucker’s record is 32-5.

“All three of the champions wrestled well,” Pickard said. “Smith’s victory was a bit of a surprise. He did not wrestled well when he met Pearson during the season.”

Ryan Baxter of Northridge won the 138-pound title. He pinned Doug Corl of Wawasee in 3:24.

“I had to keep my head in the match,” Baxter said. “When we meet during the season my win by a technical fall. He has gotten better since then, but I still knew I could beat him. Today was all about winning.”

Baxter was the champion at 126 last season.

NorthWood’s Zach Telschow was the champion at 182 pounds. He recorded a 10-8 overtime decision against Kain Jenkins of Memorial.

“He tried something and I held it off and pulled out the match,” Telschow said. “Every time we meet it seems to be a close match like this.”

Telschow and Jenkins squared off in the championship match a year ago with Telschow earning a decision that lasted four overtimes.

“Winning two years in a row is special, but it’s even more so when it’s over the same person,” Telschow added. “It’s really means something to repeat. It means you are still on top of your game.”

Telschow has a 26-3 record.

Nick Rozow of Wawasee won the title at 160 with a 5-3 decision of Goshen’s John Trenshaw.

“When we wrestled before Christmas I learned he (Trenshaw) likes lateral drops,” Rozow said. “I didn’t know that before. So today I could watch for that.”

Rozow (27-6) won his first conference championship since he

was back in middle school.

He is wrestling with a bad shoulder.

“I dislocated it last season and since then it pops out quite often,” Rozow said. “It probably happened three times today. I just wrestle through the pain. It happens often enough that I can pop it back in place myself. I don’t even have to stop the match anymore.”

Delawerence Gayfield of Concord was the champion at 113. He pinned Tristin Ponsler of Wawasee in 1:29.

Winning titles for Memorial were Jermel Moody-Neukom at 126, Nick Vaughn at 145, Chris Morris at 152 and Tieshawn Johnson at 195.
