DUNLAP — Swimming the same events meet after meet is not the way to make you faster according to Concord High School boys and girls coach Tom Johnson.

The coach got a chance to shuffle his lineup around in a meet with Mishawka on Thursday night at Concord. The CHS girls won their meet 122-53 and the boys 123-45.

“We got to mix things up,” he said. “That gives us the chance to give kids experience in different events. I don’t like to have kids swim the same event 15 to 20 times in a season. You can’t race the same event that many times and expect to get faster.

“There have been times doing this I have found kids were good in an event we didn’t know about. We had a couple of them tonight.”

The Concord girls (10-2) are idle until the sectional preliminaries on Thursday, Jan. 31 at Northridge. The boys (6-3) host the NLC preliminaries next Thursday.

It was Senior Night and Allie Herkenroder, Laura Housman and Avery Smith competed in their final home meet for the Concord girls.

“They have been so important to this program,” Johnson said. “They laid the foundation that allowed us to win sectional last season and put us in contention again this year.”

Housman won the 200-yard freestyle (2:05.54).

Trent Chamness is the lone senior boy.

“He only started swimming in October of his junior year,” Johnson said. “Now he is going to be an (NCAA) Division I swimmer. He just decided in the last week to go to Valparaiso. He has been a great leader for us.”

Sophomore Ashley Schrock was an individual double winner for the Concord girls, taking the 100 free (55.80) and 100 backstroke (1:04.03).

Also winning events for the Concord girls were junior Cassie Leas diving (130.45 points), junior Kenzie Wright 100 butterfly (1:08.310 and sophomore Heather Johnson 500 free (6:12.81). Freshman Mariah DeFreese, Herkenroder, Smith and Housman finished first in the 200 free relay (1:51.90); Housman, Herkenroder, Schrock and Wright captured the 400 free relay (4:03.25).

“I was glad we had this meet for the girls,” Johnson said.

“We still have two weeks until sectional and I really don’t like for them to go three weeks without a meet. I like them having the chance to swim.”

Chamness was an individual double winner for the Concord boys, finishing first in the 200 free (1:57.28) and 100 butterfly (1:01.82).

Freshman Rees Paul also took two events, winning the shortest race (50 free in 24.93) and the longest (500 free in 5:24.90).

Other events winners for Concord were junior Luke VanderVliet 100 breaststroke (1:12.26) and sophomore Alex Mark 200 individual medley (2:15.37).

Rees, freshman Nathan Rose, junior Eithan Towne and Ivan Morales won the 200 medley relay (2:01.51); Rose, freshman Kyle Camacho, Mark and VanderVliet the 200 free relay (1:48.38); Mark, Paul, Chamness and freshman Stephen Krecsmar the 400 free relay (3:40.92).
