FAIR FACES: Good queen of horseshoe pits

Memory of late husband keeps fair volunteer coming back each year.

GOSHEN — Amid all the hustle and bustle of the Elkhart County 4-H Fair, if you listen closely, you can hear the distinctive “clang” sound a horseshoe makes when it connects with the stake on the horseshoe court.

And chances are Judy Good will be there with her clipboard, recording the action.

Good has been a fixture at the horseshoe area for many years. Her husband Sam was in charge of the popular annual conpetition for many years before passing away in 2008.

Judy Good had been helping Sam with the compeittion pretty much the entire time. Sam Good took the competition over in 1998, and as fair time approached in 2009, Judy Good knew what she wanted to do.

“I asked if I could just take it over,” Good said Thursday night as she prepared the courts for another evening round of horseshoe competition.

The Goods were also involved in an Elkhart-based league, the Michiana Horseshoe League, for many years. It was an activity the couple enjoyed together, Good said.

So, it seemed natural for Good to keep managing the fair competition.

It’s evolved into a labor of love, Good said.

“This is a good way for me to still feel connected to Sam,” Good said.

On an average night, Good helps set the courts up, judges the competition — deciding how many points to award for tosses — and then phones the results in to local media at the end of the night.

Over the years, Good said, there have been many special moments. One funny moment came a few years ago, when a boyfriend of one of the Goods’ nieces tried his hand at the sport — and tossed his horseshoe way too high. It got caught on a wire that extands over the courts.

The wayward horseshoe eventually found its way back down to the ground on its own, Good remembered with a smile.

When she’s not involved with horsehoe competition here locally, Good keeps busy with a full-time job at two local trucking companies. She’s also involved in many church activities at Bethany Church of the Brethren.

Oh, and then there are 17 grandchildren to spend time with.

Good plans to keep managing the fair horsehoe competition for as long as they’ll have her.

“It’s a lot of fun, and it’s a great way to honor Sam’s memory,” Good said

There has been discussion at West Goshen Elementary School to require mandatory student uniforms in the future. How do you feel about the prospect of mandatory student uniforms in a public school environment?

I think it’s an excellent idea that is way overdue
I think it’s a bad idea and would be restrictive for students and parents.
