PREP TRACK AND FIELD: Sweep for the Falcons

(Continued)

BENTON — Girls Meet

Fairfield 116, Lakeland 16

BENTON — Sophomore Taylor Stidham was a triple winner as the Fairfield Falcons were 116-16 winners over the Lakeland Lakers Tuesday in NECC high school girls track and field action at Lakeland.

Stidham took the 800 meters (2:30.60), 1,600 meters (5:57.18) and 3,200 meters (13:55.30).

“Taylor had her best times of the season in the 800 and 1,600,” Fairfield coach Darin Holsopple said. “That’s great considering the weather conditions were not very good and she ran four races in a meet on Monday night.”

A steady rain fell for most of the meet and combined with falling temperatures made for less than ideal conditions.

“It was very wet,” Holsopple said. “I’m really happy with the girls tonight. We had a meet on Monday and our legs were pretty heavy.

“I told the girls this is how we need to run. We lost a lot to graduation from last season. We had a lot of holes to fill, but girls have been stepping up and filling those holes. The key for us is not the girls that are finishing first, but the ones that are stepping up to get the seconds and thirds.”

The Falcons had three double winners as senior Sophie Brown captured the high jump (4-8) and pole vault (6-6), junior Eve Rohrer the 100 hurdles (17.63) and 300 hurdles (53.69) and junior Sierra Smith shot put (32-10) and discus (100-5).

Brown’s win in the pole vault was an example of how conditions were effected by the weather. Brown has an outdoor personal best of 12-0. Due to the rainy conditions she only vaulted enough to win the meet.

Brown has already signed a national letter of intent to compere for the University of South Florida next season.

“Sophie is one of our leaders,” Holsopple said.

“Sierra (Smith) is coming on in shot and discus. She had her personal best in shot (39-8 1/2) last night and her personal best in discus tonight.”

Freshman Chloe Armbruster won the 400 meters (1:07.54) and notched seconds in the 100 meters (15.15) and pole vault (6-0).

“Chloe had a nice night,” Holsopple said. “Her 100 and 400 times were best of the season.”

Also winning individual events for the Falcons were junior Nakia Haarer long jump (14-3 1/2) and freshman Riley Miller 200 (28.46).

“Riley is fast on the track,” Holsopple said.

Fairfield swept the three relays. Junior Jenna Kieper, freshman Katie Kieper, freshman Brooklyn Straw and sophomore Anastasia Suderman took the 4 x 800 (12:41.60); Brown, Haarer, sophomore Brittany Kitson and Miller the 4 x 100 (53.93); Kitson, junior Brooke Mast, Rohrer and Armbruster the 4 x 400 (4:38.27).

The Falcons will be back in action on Thursday with a home meet against West Noble.

Two decades after NASCAR started running at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the crowds have thinned considerably. It's probably no reflection on the sport's massive following, which stretches from coast to coast, but it surely doesn't NASCAR's image help when the cameras pan across all of those empty seats.
