COLLEGE CONENCTIONS: Goshen's Newell continues to shine


Sophomore Alex Soptich (Elkhart Memorial) placed third in discus (49.03 meters) as he also qualified for the NAIA Nationals. The 4 x 400 relay of junior Tanner Foust (Fairfield), Baumgartner, freshman Murry Schliedt and freshman Conner Sowders (Penn) placed third (3:24.63); junior Chase Pinion (Fairfield) fifth in pole vault (4.21 meters) and six in javelin (45.09) and junior Michael Ponce (Elkhart Central) third in shot put (16.22 meters) and fourth in hammer (50.34).

Women’s Track and Field

•The Bethel Pilots were fourth in the team standings at the Indiana Intercollegiate “Little State” Track and Field Championships. Sophomore Jeslyn Zimmerly (Westview) won the pole vault (3.73 meters), junior Cinnamon Green (Jimtown) was third in shot put (13.54 meters) and fifth in hammer (45.42) and sophomore Melissa DuBois (Concord) sixth in long jump (5.40 meters).

• Ball State sophomore Becca Kropf (Fairfield) finished first in the 400-meter hurdles (1:04.11) in a 290-168 win over IPFW in the third annual Cardinal Invitational. Kropf also teamed with senior Hannah Lange, freshmen Makelle Skelton and Ariel Hune to win the 4 x 400 relay (4:01.67).


• Freshman Caleb Stayton (Elkhart Christian Academy) singled and drove in three runs for the Ball State Cardinals in a 15-4 Mid-American Conference win over Toledo.

• The Bethel Pilots defeated Indiana Wesleyan 6-1 and dropped a 9-6 decision to the Wildcats in a Crossroads League twin bill. Senior Kyle Revella (Elkhart Christian Academy) had two singles for the Pilots in the first game and drive in a run in the second.

Women’s Golf

The Drury University Panthers captured first place in the team standings of the Maryville Spring Invitational at The Quarry at Crystal Spring. Inclement weather for the cancellation of the second round. Panther sophomore Heather Gladfelter (Goshen) shared 38th place among the individuals with a 90.

Men’s Golf

• The Bethel Pilots finished in the runner-up spot behind Saint Xavier in the Bethel Invitational at Blackthorn Golf Club near South Bend. The winners carded a 288-300—588 and the Pilots a 292-304—596. Bethel junior Brian Ulrich (Fairfield) had a 72-78—150 and freshman Zach Hochstedler 77-73—150 to tie for ninth among the individuals. Also for the Pilots, freshman Tom Johnson (Concord) shared 24th with a 78-78—156.

Holy Cross sophomore Cody Richardson (Lakeland) tied for 31st with a 77-81—158.

Last weekend (July 12) the Goshen Parks Department held its Kid’s Try-athlon to promote childhood fitness and this week (July 18) the new bicycle trail is open to the fairgrounds in Goshen, offering residents a healthy way to get to the annual agriculture exposition.
