GOSHEN — Bethel College’s pitching sensation — junior Natalie Newell — posted a 4-0 record to earn both the Crossroads League Pitcher of the Week and NCCAA Softball Pitcher Student-Athlete of the Week honors.
The Goshen High School graduate is off to a 10-1 start this season, leading the Pilots to a 13-9 record.
The two-time Crossroads League Pitcher of the Year gave up only two runs (one earned) in 28 innings of work during the period of time she was honored for. She allowed 11 base hits and struck out 47
Nationally, Newell ranks in the top 10 in seven categories including leading the nation in batters struck out per nine innings played (12.4).
• Freshman second baseman Madison Schrock (Northridge) singled and her twin sister left fielder Haley Schrock (Northridge) recorded a pair of putouts for the Bowling Green Falcons in a 3-2 Mid-American Conference loss to Ohio University.
•Saint Mary’s senior Callie Selner (Elkhart Memorial) played a key role as the Belles swept both ends of a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader with Albion College. Selner had two hits, scored a run and pitched two innings of scoreless relief in an 8-6 win in the opener and was the winning pitcher, improving her record to 6-3 in the 8-2 nightcap victory. She struck out seven and walked two in the complete game.
Men’s Track and Field
•The Bethel Pilots, led by their winning 4 x 100-meter relay, took third place in the team standings at the Indiana Intercollegiate “Little State” Track and Field Championships that included ten teams representing the NCAA DII, NAIA and NJCAA (National Junior College Athletic Association). The meet was held at Indiana Wesleyan University.
The men’s 4 x 100 team of freshman Cayden Merkler, freshman Brett Baumgartner (Fairfield), sophomore Ahmad Evans, and freshman Tommy Grant (Penn) took top honors with a time of 41.53, which gives them an automatic bid to the NAIA National Championships.
