Kitson, nearing TD record, leads Falcons into semifinals

GOSHEN — Cameron Kitson is closing in on the record for touchdowns in a single season at Fairfield High School.

The 5-9 (175) senior speedster scored three TDs in last Friday’s 42-28 win at Maconaquah in the first round of the Class 3A, Sectional 26 tournament bracket. Kitson has 25 TDs this season (21 rushing and four receiving).

Falcon legend Jayme Mathews scored 27 TDs in 1996 to set the school record.

“Kitson is a threat every time he touches the ball,” Fairfield coach Bob Miller said. “All he needs is a seam in the defense and he can accelerate right through it. He is just a solid running back that can run with either power or speed.”

Mathews still holds the Fairfield record for rushing TDs in a single game with seven against Churubusco in 1996, rushing TDs in a career with 70 from 1993-96 and most points in a career with 453.

Twin Lakes (6-4) at Fairfield (9-1)

Kickoff: 8 p.m.

Series record: First-ever meeting

One week after making the long trip to Bunker Hill, the Falcons will be at home this week as the Twin Lakes Indians have to make the journey from Monticello to Benton.

Due to the travel time involved the kickoff has been moved to 8 p.m.

“It’s about two-and-a-half hours and that could stretch to three hours on a school bus,” Miller said. “I thought they might ask to play the game on Saturday, but I’m glad they didn’t.”

The Indians have wins over Logansport (17-7), Frankfort (24-21 in three overtimes), Delphi (20-8), Benton Central (42-12), North Judson (62-20) and Culver Military Academy (14-13). Losses have been to Lafayette Central Catholic (30-14), Rensselaer Central (45-0), West Lafayette (49-28) and Tipton (34-7).

The only common opponent is Culver Military. Fairfield was a 28-12 winner over CMA.

“Twin Lakes plays in an outstanding (Hoosier) conference and have faced some really good teams,” Miller said. “They are big with 300, 280 and 270 in the offensive line and a tailback that weighs 200.
