Goshen bests SB Riley

The Goshen girls swimming and diving team opened the season with a 101-80 victory over a talented South Bend Riley team Saturday morning.

Olivia Wenger and Heather Ronci paced Goshen with three wins each. Wenger posted a personal best time in the 100 freestyle, won the 50 freestyle, and anchored the 400 free relay to a come from behind win. Ronci won the 200 freestyle in a personal best time, anchored the victorious 200 free relay, and swam a fast leg of the 400 free relay.

Other winners included Claire Palczynski, Emma Hussey, Natalie Evans, and Jenea Born. Many excellent first meet times were turned in throughout the Goshen lineup. South Bend Riley’s Abby Kirkpatrick broke a 19-year old pool record in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:08.87 eclipsing the previous mark of Mishawaka’s Mary Ruppe’s 1:09.70 in 1984.

Goshen is 1-0 and competes next in the annual Goshen Relay meet next Saturday.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Chargers best Bruins

West Noble was a 59-18 winner over Bethany Christian in a nonconference contest in Ligonier Saturday night.

Lexi Shepherd led the Chargers (1-1) with 12 points. Kelsie Peterson had 10. J. Helmuth paced Bethany with seven points.

The Chargers open NECC play Tuesday night at home against Angola. Bethany (1-2) hosts Adams Central next Saturday night.

Goshen tops Bremen

The Redskins traveled to Bremen Saturday night and came away with a hard-fought 63-50 victory.

Goshen was able to fight through several Bremen runs and pull away in the fourth quarter in a very physical game.

Leading the way offensively for Goshen was Deja Felder with 26 points, six assists and five steals. Christina Gipson added 12 points and six rebounds and freshman Ashton Ellis had points and five assists. Kayci Troyer led the way on the boards with 11 rebounds.

Goshen is back in action on Tuesday at Mishawaka Marian.
