Timing problem

The NLC and the NIC have been running their cross country meets on the same Saturday at Ox Bow for the past few years. The JV races are run with the two conference combined while the varsity ones are separate. It has went off without a hitch until last Saturday when it was discovered both league had been sent the same 10:30 a.m. starting time for boys.

After some discussion it was decided to run a combined varsity race. The runners would run the same course until approaching the finish line where there was a chute for each league.

“It was kind of fun to run with the NIC,” Northridge senior Blake O’Dell said. “I was able to race some guys that I see during the two-mile in track season.

An AD’s work is never done

The last line of a high school athletic director’s job description must be something like and all other duties deemed necessary. Goshen AD Larry Kissinger found out last week just what his job might entail.

The Goshen boys soccer team was hosting Elkhart Memorial last Thursday.

When press box worker Dale Sleppy went to play the national anthem before the contest.

The CD player malfunctioned partway through and would not continue.

The quick-thinking Kissinger grabbed the microphone and told the crowd, “We are going to sing the national anthem and you are going to help because you don’t want to hear me sing.”

To the crowd’s credit they joined in.

Honored Blue Blazers

Elkhart Central senior Taylor Shreiner has been named MaxPreps-American Volleyball Coaches Association Player of the Week for Indiana.

It’s the third time in the last four weeks a member of the Central team has been so honored. Senior Azariah Stahl was recognized for the weeks ending Sept. 8 and 22 and Shreiner for the period ending Sept. 29.

Shreiner accumulated 134 setting assists, 24 digs and four aces for her honor while the previous week Stahl had 78 kills, 37 digs and nine aces for her award.
