PREP BOYS TENNIS: Several area netters win NLC titles

GOSHEN — Josh Garfein of Northridge and Bernardo Cadario of Concord were among the position winners in the NLC high school boys tennis tournament that concluded Saturday at Goshen Middle School.

Warsaw based on wins at No. 2 singles and No. 2 doubles took the team title. Plymouth was second, followed by Concord, Goshen, Northridge, NorthWood, Wawasee and Elkhart Memorial.

“Overall we did about as well as we expected,” Northridge coach Evan Atkinson said. “We did have some kids step up where we needed them to.”

Garfein defeated Nick Pollock of Concord 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 1 singles championship.

“Josh played phenomenal tennis,” Atkinson said. “Today was really special. He played the match of his career on Thursday to get to the finale. Josh gutted that match out. He came up with all the shots when he needed them.”

Garfein topped John Hunter of Plymouth 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 7-5 on Thursday.

“I played my game, but Nick did not play his best today,” Garfein said. “I try to move my opponent around the court and take advantage of the short balls when I can. The other thing is to be consistent.”

Cadario defeated Austin Stutzman of Goshen 6-4, 6-1 in the No. 2 singles finale.

“Bernardo played well,” Concord coach Todd Denton said. “It has taken him some time to get used to playing on hard (asphalt) surfaces. He is used to playing on clay. The different surfaces have an effect on your timing and it takes awhile to make the adjustment.”

Cadario is an exchange student from Bolivia.

“I started a little slow today before finding my game,” he said. “I listened to what my coach told me and I tried to sty within my game.”

Stutzman posted a 6-4, 6-1 win over John Gerard of Plymouth in the semifinals.

“Austin had a great tourney. He played some tremendous tennis,” Goshen coach Daniel Love said. “He just lost to a better player in the finals.”

Also for Goshen, Logan Troyer and Zach Troyer defeated Landon Arnold and Sam Hoover of Northridge 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) to finish third at No. 3 doubles. The Goshen duo dropped a 6-4, 6-0 to Caleb Ray and Nic Jansen of Warsaw who went to place first at the position.

“Logan and Zach had a tough match on Thursday so it was nice to see them bounce back today,” Love said. “They were much better in their placement today especially in serve receive. Today they were also serving away from the volley and they finished points when they had opportunities.”

Goshen’s biggest rally of the tourney was by Hudson Kay at No. 1 singles when he recorded a 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 win over Kyler Love of Wawasee to place fifth.

“Hudson lost the first set and was down 4-0 in the second,” Love said. “He rallied to take the second set in a tie breaker before winning the third. That is one of the biggest comebacks I have ever seen. He completely had to change his approach to pull the match out and if he had not won he might not have been voted honorable mention all-conference. Winning the way he did showed he was deserving of the honor.”

Two decades after NASCAR started running at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the crowds have thinned considerably. It's probably no reflection on the sport's massive following, which stretches from coast to coast, but it surely doesn't NASCAR's image help when the cameras pan across all of those empty seats.
