PREP BASEBALL: Raiders sweep

Northridge overpowers overmatched Angola in DH

MIDDLEBURY — After going 1-1 last weekend in a pair of games at Covaleski Regional Stadium to open the 2013 season, the Northridge baseball team was looking to end spring break on a winning note on Saturday when Angola came to town for a nonconference doubleheader.

Mission accomplished, as the Raiders (3-1) swept the Hornets, taking the opener, 4-0 and finishing off Angola with a 13-2 run-rule victory halted after five innings.

It was just the kind of focused effort Northridge coach Andrew Brabender was looking for from his team under not-so-idea conditions: Game-time temperatures were in the mid-40s, with a srtill wind making it feel much colder.

“Conditions were not ideal for hitting,” Brabender said. “But our pitching got it done for us in the first game.”

That pitcher was Blake Fry, who struck out four en route to the shutout.

Fry said he’d been looking forward to the start and just had to shake off the conditions.

“You just work a little harder to get warm and stay warm,” Fry said. “I felt like I was getting stronger as the game went on.”

In the second game, the Raiders did most of their damage a little at a time, with two runs in the first, three in the second, six in the third, and two in the fourth.

Angola got its lone runs in the top of the fifth.

Austin Moniot had a two-run single and Sam Troyer a two-run double to provide some of the major pop on the afternoon for the Raiders.

The Raiders return to action on Monday when they host Jimtown.

There has been discussion at West Goshen Elementary School to require mandatory student uniforms in the future. How do you feel about the prospect of mandatory student uniforms in a public school environment?

I think it’s an excellent idea that is way overdue
I think it’s a bad idea and would be restrictive for students and parents.
