PREP WRESTLING: Momentum swing helps Warriors top Panthers in NLC

NAPPANEE —  Wawasee High School wrestling coach Paul Meyer got just what he needed from senior Brian Clark.

Clark notched a pin while wrestling NorthWood junior Corbin Johnson at 195 pounds that changed the momentum in the NLC match, allowing the Warriors to go on to a 42-31 league victory Thursday night at NorthWood.

“Clark’s pin was huge, but that is what I expect from my seniors,” the coach said. “This was a big win for us in the conference.”

Wawasee was trailing 13-6 entering Clark’s match. The six points for his pin pulled the Warriors to within one point and Wawasee took the lead for good (18-13) in the 220 match when freshman Andy Holdeman pinned NorthWood sophomore Zach BeMiller in 2:13.

NorthWood had taken the early lead with a pair of decisions and a pin in the first four matches. The 152-pound match was first and sophomore Derek Weldy recorded decision followed by decision from sophomore Scott Kern at 170 and a pin by senior Zach Telschow at 182.

“My wrestlers at 152, 170 and 182 are the better kids,” NorthWood coach Damon Hummel said.

“Telschow placed sixth in his class at the Al Smith Invitational in Mishawaka. We have been working with him to go for more pins.”

“Johnson (195) is just coming back from a separated shoulder plus Weldy (152) and Caleb Reeve (senior at 145) are just coming back from concussions.”

Besides Clark there are three others seniors in the Wawasee lineup.

They are Doug Corl at 138, Nick Rozow at 160 and Chad Epply at 285. Corl pinned his opponent at 1:54, Rozow at 1:41 and Epply at 1:27.

“I expect the seniors to win by pins,” Meyer said. “We lost to Warsaw by one team point and none of the seniors recorded a pin. I told them none of you guys got us six points and we lost by one team point. You do the math.”

Also recording points by pinfalls for Wawasee were freshman Tristan Ponsler at 113, freshman Harvey Lopez at 120 and junior Michael Pena at 145.

“We have a number of kids out with the flu,” Meyer said. “But the guys are starting to get it and are starting to wrestle for the team rather than as individuals.”

Other match winners for NorthWood were junior Lucas Hochstetler by forfeit at 106, senior Cody Pippin by pin at 126 and sophomore Josh Chupp by pin at 132.

“We are very inexperienced,” Hummel said. “There are a lot of freshmen in our lineup. At one point we had seven kids in the lineup that had only about six weeks of wrestling. We just need to get some more mat time.”
