---- — GOSHEN — On “Senior Night” in Goshen High School wrestling, the Redskins performed like seasoned veterans.
Starting off with four pins and adding a couple more later, Goshen cruised to a 49-15 Northern Lakes Conference victory Thursday over the Northridge Raiders.
Goshen now has a 12-3 overall record and is 4-1 in the conference, somewhat surprising even to veteran head coach Jim Pickard.
“With the limited experience we had returning, I figured we would struggle to be above .500,” said Pickard. “We’re pleased to be where we are, but there is a lot of wrestling left including eight dual meets.”
Five of those occur on Saturday in “Super Dual” action at Hobart. The team title could by decided in a showdown between the Redskins and host Brickies.
Goshen jumped to a 24-0 lead on Northridge as freshman Jose Montanez at 285 pounds, senior Jaron Katzer at 106, senior Scotty Huff at 113 and sophomore Logan Maynard at 120 all won by pin.
Later on, both senior John Trenshaw at 170 and senior Evan Smith at 182 won in identical pin times of 1:58 in the first period. Total mat time for Goshen’s six pin winners was 11:54.
After a lackluster showing in a Tuesday night win at home over NorthWood, Pickard thought his squad was a bit sharper against the Raiders.
“Northridge juggled its lineup around and we expected a challenge from them. Those were huge wins by Montanez and Maynard. We came out to wrestle in this one.”
Goshen winners on points were senior Dante Wilcher at 126, junior Joel Byler at 132, sophomore Miguel Navarro at 160 and sophomore Derek Paz at 220.
Northridge had three consecutive wins in the middleweights with senior Jon Yoder taking a 6-3 verdict at 138, senior Ryan Baxter winning 10-5 at 145 and senior Nick Maher pinning his GHS foe at 152.
Junior Isaac Zickafoose added the Raiders’ other triumph with a 7-2 decision at 195.
“We worked on attitude in practice Wednesday,” said Pickard. “Even in wrestling, an athlete has to show some patience. You take what’s presented by your opponent and then try to assume control.
Seniors honored before the match were Bustos, Hernandez, Huff, Katzer, Smith, Trenshaw, Wilcher, David DeLaTorre, Alexander DeLaPaz, Johnny Peebles and Matt Unrue.
By a quirk in the every-other-year schedule, the contest with Northridge is Goshen’s last home regular season match of the season.
Goshen does host its invitational in January and a regional in February.
The Redskin wrestling program hosts its annual spaghetti supper tonight in the GHS cafeteria prior to the boys basketball game with Northridge.
Junior varsity winners were Eric Smith, Austin Marlow, Oscar Chavarria and Alberto Avila of Goshen, Trent Bixler and Christian Miller of Northridge. Miller won a 20-18 overtime thriller from Juan Hernandez of GHS.
