---- — NAPPANEE — If high-scoring, shoot-the-lights-out basketball is your kind of night, then Tuesday night’s nonconference matchup between NorthWood and Jimtown might not have been your thing.

The two area rivals had a defensive battle and in the end it was NorthWood pulling away down the stretch for a 36-25 win at the Panther Pit.

It was the kind of game NorthWood coach Aaron Wolfe was expecting.

“In a low-possession game like this, you have to take advantage of every trip down the floor,” Wlfe said. “We missed some shots early, but we executed better in at the end.

The two teams combined for just 26 points in the first half. NorthWood led 4-3 at the first stop and 15-11 at halftime.

The third stanza was more of the same and NorthWood held a slim 20-15 advantage with eight minutes to play.

The Panthers finally began to shake loose with about five minutes to play, putting together a 10-5 run for a 30-20 advantage.

The double-digit advantage took Jimtown out of its slowdown offense down the stretch.

Jimtown coach Ron Dietz liked his team’s effort and defensive intensity for most of the night.

“Our kids battled,” Dietz said. “We made them (NorthWood) take good shots. I’m happy with the effort, but we need to turn it into wins.”

Jimtown dropped to 2-2. NorthWood improved to 4-0.

Zach Zurcher led all scorers with 19 points for NorthWood. Will Stueve had eight.

Dylan Guldager led Jimtown with 11 points.

The Panthers open NLC play Friday night at home against Plymouth. Jimtown hosts Culver, also Friday night.
