GOSHEN — A senior and a freshman provided the most exciting moments Tuesday night in a Northern Lakes Conference high school wrestling match at the Goshen gym.
The Redskins had this one wrapped up by the eighth contest and went on to notch a 60-15 triumph over the NorthWood Panthers, improving their records to 10-3 overall and 2-1 in the league.
Senior Ramiro Hernandez of GHS and ninth grader Garrett Griffin of NorthWood were among winners.
Hernandez, leading off the evening at 195 pounds, captured a 9-7 thriller over Panther freshman Mike Leonard. Hernandez scored a takedown with 47 seconds to go for a 5-5 tie and Leonard quickly executed a reversal to regain the lead at 7-5. Hernandez managed a reversal and takedown with :02 remaining to win it.
The Panthers were trailing 48-0 when Griffin broke the ice with a 7-5 verdict over Goshen junior Victor Flores. A key reversal in the second period made the difference.
Despite the lopsided victory, Goshen coach Jim Pickard saw some flaws in a team coming off a big victory last Thursday over rival Elkhart Memorial.
“We came out flat in a lot of matches,” he said. “Even some of the guys who won by pin got off to slow starts. That’s something we need to get over or it will catch up with us.
“We’ll learn from this and move on. We just need to ready at the start, be sharper and more aggressive. This team is a work in progress and we got away from some good technique in this match.”
After the opening win by Hernandez, Goshen won seven consecutive contests by pins to clinch the team decision at 45-0.
Barely beating the horn were sophomore Logan Maynard with one second to go in Period 1 at 120 pounds and senior Dante Wilcher with two seconds left in the second period at 126.
Also winning by pin for the Redskins were seniors Jaron Katzer at 106, Scotty Huff at 113, John Trenshaw at 170 and Evan Smith at 182; junior Joel Byler at 132, sophomore Derek Paz at 220 and freshman Jose Montanez at 285.
Senior Josh Bustos won a 5-2 decision at 138.
Huff remains undefeated on the season with Katzer, Paz and Trenshaw each having one loss.
NorthWood’s three victories came consecutively. After Griffin, both freshman Tyler Fitzpatrick and junior Derek Weldy pinned their Redskin foes in the first period.
Goshen is back in action at home Thursday night against Northridge, the JV starting at 6:45.
Note: It was 50 years ago this month that the GHS wrestling program made its debut with a 36-16 win over Concord. Joe Springer was head coach with Jim Johnson, Jim LeCount, Jim Dunn, Jim Dye, Phil Blosser and Terry McAdam among wrestlers.
Matches in 1963 were held in what was then the swimming pool observation room and is now a weight training facility.
