Season winding down for area boys hoops

---- — GOSHEN — The high school boys basketball regular season is winding down with this weekend being the next to the last one before sectionals begin on Tuesday, March 4.

Sectional pairings will be released on Sunday. Fans can watch the 90-minute show on IHSAAtv.org, beginning at 3:30 p.m.

Concord, Elkhart Central, Elkhart Memorial, Goshen, Northridge and Warsaw makeup the Class 4A field at North Side Gym in Elkhart. Fairfield, Lakeland, NorthWood, Tippecanoe Valley, Wawasee, West Noble and Whitko are in the 3A field at Wawasee. Bremen, Central Noble, Fremont, LaVille, Prairie Heights and Westview comprise the 2A field at Westview. Bethany Christian, Elkhart Christian Academy, Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian, Hamilton, Howe School, Lakeland Christian and Lakewood Park Christian are in the 1A field at Hamilton.

One of the highlight games on the local scene has the Westview Warriors (13-4, 7-1 NECC) at the Fairfield Falcons (10-6, 6-1). Due to the Westview girls playing in the Class 2A regional Saturday at Rensselaer Central the time for the boys games has been changed. The JV game is slated to begin at 2 p.m. and the varsity around 3:30.

The teams just played back on Jan. 15 in the second round of the NECC tourney with the Warriors winning 71-55. This will be the third season in a row and the seventh in the last eight these local rivals have played twice.

Junior Chandler Aspy scored 25 points, senior Judah Zickafoose 14 and classmate Jordyn Bontrager 11 to lead the Warriors in the first game with the Falcons. Sophomore Brock Goeglein netted 12 points and junior Joe Line 10 for the Falcons.

Bontrager is averaging 19.3 ppg, Aspy 15.0 and Zickafoose 9.1 for Westview. Line is averaging 18.4 for the Falcons.

Fairfield is also in action on Friday when the Falcons travel to Churubusco (4-14, 3-5).

The Northridge Raiders (15-2) fresh off winning the NLC championship host the Lakeland Lakers (7-9) on Friday and the Columbia City Eagles (8-10) on Saturday. Leading scorers for Northridge are senior Nate Ritchie 24.2 ppg and junior Pete Smith 12.0.

In a matchup of schools close geographically the Concord Minutemen (11-6) travel to Jimtown (7-10) Friday. Senior Ramon Johnson at 20.5 ppg and junior Filip Serwatka 15.6 are the leading scorers for the Minutemen. Senior Adam Glanders is coming off a 25-point performance on Tuesday in a 66-61 loss at South Bend Riley.

Nick Floyd 11.6 ppg and Adam DeShone 9.3 are the leading scorers for Jimtown.

The NorthWood Panthers (16-1) entertain the Bremen Lions (2-13) Friday. Top scorers for the Panthers are seniors Zach Zurcher 20.8 ppg, Jonathan Wilkinson 17.2 and Will Stueve 10.5.

NorthWood is on pace for its finest season in school history. The best record in school history is an 18-4 mark in 1981-82 for coach Tom Firestone. The most wins in school history is 19 in 1994-95 (19-6) and in 2006-07 (19-6) both for coach Dan Gunn.

Bethany Christian (3-14) hosts the LaVille Lancers (7-8) on Saturday. Junior Sol Brenneman 12.7 ppg and senior Abe Thorne 11.9 top the BC Bruins in scoring.

The Wawasee Warriors (4-13) are at Fort Wayne South (4-10) Friday. The leading scorers for the Warriors is Alex Clark 13.3 ppg.
