COLLEGE CONNECTIONS: Ex-Raider excels at meet in St. Louis


GOSHEN — David Long captured medalist honors for the first time in his collegiate career at the Mississippi Valley State University tournament  at St. Louis.

The Missouri Baptist University sophomore, who is a Northridge High School graduate, carded a two-under par 70-69—139 to finish ahead of freshman teammate Jan-Henry Jordaan at 143.

The team score was 284-289—673. The Spartans had a 42-stroke lead after the opening round and won by a convincing 64 strokes.

The Spartans will be back in action when they host the AMC Preview Tournament on April 23. The tournament will be held at Gateway National Golf Links in Madison, Illinois.

Women’s Track and Field

Ball State freshman Becca Kropf (Fairfield) had quite a day with two individual firsts and a relay victory as the Cardinals won their own invitational. She placed first in the 100-meter hurdles (16.10) and 400 hurdles (1:08.37) before teaming with sophomore Katie Behrendt, senior Janae Taylor and freshman Danielle Dahl to win the 4 x 400 relay (4:07.94).

Manchester senior Karla Madrigal (Elkhart Central) won the 5,000 meters (17:51.19) at the Indiana Division III Championships at Franklin College. Sophomore Rachel Weeber (Concord) cleared 5-1 in high jump to qualify for the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference championships.

Bethel sophomore Cinnamon Green (Jimtown) finished first in shot put (13.04 meters) and eighth in hammer (41.90) and freshman Melissa DuBois (Concord) second in long jump (5.12 meters) and fourth in javelin (31.92 meters) as the Pilots placed eighth in the team standings with 119 points at the Indiana Intercollegiate Meet at Indiana Wesleyan University.

The Goshen College Maple Leafs had two relays finish among the top ten at the Indiana Intercollegiate Meet. Sophomore Avery Bischoff, junior Bianca Brambila, junior Dana Christner (Northridge) and Sandrine Sandrali were sixth in the 4 x 400 (4:13.93) and Brambila, Christner, sophomore Ali Hochstetler (Bethany Christian) and freshman Irene Schmid seventh in the  4 x 800  (10:18.22). Christner placed 16th in the 400 (1:07.51).


Senior starting pitcher Kyle Konarski (Concord), improved his record to 6-0, striking out seven over seven innings as the Manchester Spartans rolled over Hanover 16-3 in the second game of a twin bill at North Manchester. The No. 14 ranked D3Baseball.com and No. 15 ranked American Baseball Coaches Association Division III Spartans were 14-2 winners in the nightcap.

Konarski has a 2.30 earned run average. He has allowed 43 hits in 43 innings to go with 35 strikeouts and 16 walks.

Also for the Spartans senior infielder Chaz Bellman (NorthWood) had appeared in four games. Has one hits in three at bats and has scored a run.

Huntington senior Adam Christner (Westview) slugged a leadoff double and scored on a single by junior Blake Ayres as the Foresters dropped a 5-1 decision to Mount Vernon in a Crossroads twin bill. Mount Vernon was a 9-1 winner in the nightcap.

John A Logan College defeated Lake Land College 8-3 in the opening game of a doubleheader before dropping a 3-2 decision in the second contest. Sophomore Zac Mishler (Westview) had two hits for John A. Logan in the nightcap.


Sophomore hurler Natalie Newell (Goshen) improved her record to 8-3 this season by picking up the wins in both games of a Crossroads League doubleheader with Taylor.

Newell threw a complete game in the opening 5-3 victory. She allowed seven hits and three runs (two earned) to go with three walks and five strikeouts.

She went the final 3 2/3 innings of 12-4 Pilot win in the second game. Newell gave no hits and ho runs while walking  two and striking out two.

The Pilots are 17-5 this season.

Men’s Track and Field

Manchester senior John McCall (NorthWood) ran an 11.29 100 meters at the H Dean Evans Track and Field Complex to qualify with the seventh fastest time for the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference championships.

The Bethel Pilots finished sixth in the team standings with 67 points at the Indiana Intercollegiate Meet at Indiana Wesleyan University.

Pilot sophomore Jake Walter (Fairfield) was seventh in shot put (13.87 meters).

The Goshen College Maple Leafs set a school record in the 4 x 800-meter relay at the Indiana Intercollegiate Meet as the foursome of senior Billy Funk, freshman Lucas Harnish, freshman Tim Lehman and sophomore Daniel Zelaya (Concord) were clocked in 7:56.20.

The time took six seconds off the prior school record and were two seconds ahead off the runner-up team from Indiana Wesleyan and nearly 20 seconds in front of the third-place team. Zelaya placed third in the 1,500 (4:13.45), sophomore Jordan Smeltzer (Fairfield) seventh in steeplechase (10:10.12) and sophomore Alex Rodriguez (Concord) 10th in steeplechase (10:27.65).

Huntington freshman Daniel DeBoni (Goshen)  finished third in the 100 meters (11.11) and fourth in the 200 (22.81) at the Indiana Intercollegiate Meet.

Men’s Golf

The Bethel Pilots took first place in the team standings of the Pilot Spring Invitational at Blackthorn Golf Club near South Bend.

The Pilots were led by senior Brady Klotz (NorthWood) who captured medalist honors (73-70—143) and sophomore Brian Ulrich (Fairfield) fifth (78-78—156).

Goshen College finished 13th in the team standings as freshman Alejandro Genis (Elkhart Central) tied for 67th in the individual standings (89-85—174).

Women’s Golf

Junior Taylor Goshert (Wawasee) tied for 22nd place among the individuals (88-93—181) as the Indiana Wesleyan Wildcats placed fourth in the team standings at the Bethel Pilot Spring Invitational at Blackthorn Golf Club near South Bend.
