The Goshen High School girls basketball team took a major step forward in 2011-12: After a 7-14 campaign in 2010-11. the Redskins were 13-8 a year ago with a very young lineup.
That very young lineup is now a year older, with valuable varsity game experience under its belt, and head coach Lenny Krebs has much to be optimistic about as his team opens the 2012-13 campaign.
The Redskins did just that on the road Tuesday night, scoring early and often in a 79-16 win over host Lakeland.
Krebs has been pleased with the effort and intensity shown by his team so far this preseason.
The Redskins will be young again in 2012-13, with just one senior.
But that senior is a key one: 5-5 guard Aimee Swihart, a three-year letterwinner who should earn a fourth varsity letter this season.
“I’m sure there are some coaches in the area that are thinking, ‘Is she still there?’” Krebs said with a smile.
Swihart is the kind of player who can do it all, and has been expected to during her career.
“She’s like a coach on the floor out there for us,” Kreba said.
Swihart said she is ready to take the leadership role that will be expected of her this season.
“I’m a lead-by-example kind of player,” Swihart said before a recent practice. “I’ve applied what I have learned over the past three years, and now it’s my turn to pass that along to the younger players.”
Also back as returning letterwiners for the Redskins are 5-6 junior guard Deja Felder; 5-8 guard/forward Christina Gipson; and 5-5 sophomore guard Yadira Cabrales, who saw significant playing time last year as a freshman.
One area of improvement for the Redskins this season will be on defense.
The Redskins had a great scoring average last year, putting up 58.1 ppg. And their defensive average was not bad at 47.1 ppg.
But there were several occasions where the Redskins gave up more than 60 points in a game.
“We should not be losing games when we’re scoring that many points,” Krebs said.
Krebs is entering his 10th season coaching the Redskins. He is 69-122 over that span.
Matt Carpenter, Jack Beer, Kim Bradshaw and Joe Wharton are assistant coaches for the Redskins.
Other varsity players for the Redskins in 2012-13 include sophomore forward Kayci Troyer; sophomore forward Leslie VanLandingham; and junior forward Jessica DeStefano.
The Redskins return to action Saturday night at home when they host Bremen. Tipoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.
