Podgorski is Redskin leader

The 49th season of Goshen High School boys swimming starts Tuesday at New Prairie.

The Redskins are again coached by Scott Garvin who is working with a squad of two dozen hopefuls including eight returning lettermen.

“Numbers are up and we expect a lot of good things from this group,” said the coach. “We look for a better record in dual meets and want to place higher in the (Northern Lakes) conference and sectional meets.”

It’s still a young squad with Andrew Podgorski the only senior letterman.

He furnished Goshen with it’s season highlight last winter by becoming the first Redskin boy in at least a decade to win a sectional championship.

He finished first in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:01.26, qualifying for the state finals at Indianapolis.

Other lettermen are juniors Addison Christner, Connor Haviland, Taylor Haviland and Jason Yoder, sophomores Victor Garcia, Ryan Long and Clancy Short.

Podgorski was the team’s most valuable swimmer while Long earned the coaches award and Short the teamwork prize.

Podgorski is also looking at trying the 50 freestyle this season, Connor Haviland breaststroke, Taylor Haviland backstroke, Christner the 200 free and backstroke, Garcia IM and breaststroke, Long diving, Short backstroke and Yoder the 200 and 500 frees.

Others on the roster are seniors Rob Andrews, Carlo Boeri, Joey Miller and Adrian Rosas, juniors Kevin Bowser, Larry Boynton, Chino Garcia, Wesley Kuric, Jon Rheinheimer, Tyler Wynn and Barrett Younghans, sophomores Tommy Palczynski and Alex Podgorski, freshmen Adam Bratton, Winston Corbett and Daniel Swihart.

Bratton is a promising 9th grader, looking strong in the backstroke and 500 free.

“While we do have eight lettermen, there are also a lot of first-time varsity swimmers who must add to the depth of our team,” said Garvin.

“We will be looking at a lot of swimmers early but, after Christmas break, we will need to settle on a lineup of who is best in what event to help the team the most.”

GHS boys swimming started with the 1961-62 season and Bill Ennis was the Redskins’ first head coach.

The current gym-pool building opened with a basketball game in January of 1961 and swimming was added the following school year.
