Lowell pulls away from Minutemen

LOWELL — The “Inferno” was simply too hot for the Concord Minutemen.

The Lowell Red Devils rushed for a whopping 516 yards in a 60-23 over Concord in the Class 4A, Sectional 10 high school football championship game Friday night at Lowell.

It’s the seventh straight second title for the Red Devils.

The Red Devils built a 36-23 lead by halftime and outscored Concord 24-0 in the second.

Concord’s defense couldn’t stop the Lowell rushing game that racked up a total of 527 yards. The Red Devils attempted only two passes, competing one for an 11-yard touchdown in the second quarter.

Senior tailback Brandon Grubbe carried the ball 28 times for 244 yards and four TDs to pace the Red Devils.

Concord led 10-7 at the end of the first period. Junior quarterback Anthony Yoder scored on a 5-yard run. Senior Cameron Doering kicked the PAT and a 23-yard field goal.

Lowell’s domination began in the second period as the Red Devils scored on all five possessions.

Concord received the second-half kickoff but fumbled the ball and Lowell recovered at the C-11. Concord’s defense stiffened and the Red Devils had to settle for a field goal.

The Minutemen took the ensuing kickoff and drove to the L-28 before turning the ball over on downs.

That was pretty much it for the Concord offense.

Yoder finished the game, completing nine of 23 passes for 200 yards. He tossed his 32nd TD pass of the season to junior Logan Draus at 9:33 of the second period.

Concord sophomore TeShon Sanders 10 times for 110 yards.

Concord finishes 8-4.
