Five Goshen bowling enthusiasts being honored
The Goshen Bowling Hall of Fame dinner and induction ceremonies are scheduled for Saturday at the Greencroft Senior Center.
The 12th induction class includes Marilyn Kehr, Paul Jones Sr., Wayne Saunders, Debbie Brown and Anne Babcock.
Social time begins at 6:30 p.m. with dinner scheduled for 7.
Following are profiles of this year’s class:
Marilyn Kehr
Marilyn began bowling at the former Wood-Ro Lanes in 1954 in the Tuesday Night Owl League.
“It was a fun group and I thorougly enjoyed my time bowling with them,” she said.
Kehr was city bowling tournament all-events winner in 1958 and singles handicap champion in 1959.
In 1961 she won all events handicap with a 1741, high actual game of 256, high actual series of 624 and won doubles with Carlene Cripe.
Marilyn also bowled in several mixed tournaments with Ike Miller and participated in three state tournaments.
She has been a member of the Parmore Ladies Golf League for 32 years and serves as historian for that group.
Marilyn has been married to Ron for 59 years. They have two children — Jane (Jack) Elliott and Ross (Marla) Kehr — and four grandchildren.
Paul Jones Sr.
Paul is being inducted for meritorious service. He bowls in the Commercial B League with his Indiana Wood team winning the title three of the last four years.
Jones has bowled for 15 years, serving as Commercial B secretary for 13.
He has participated in 12 state tournaments, winning the 2004 Class E senior singles title. Jones has also bowled in seven national events.
Paul is married to Debra. They have three daughters — Melinda, Rebecca and Rachel — and two sons — Paul and Daniel. There is also one granddaughter.
Wayne Saunders
Wayne has bowled Monday nights at Maple City since the doors were opened back in the early 1960s. He is being inducted for meritorious service.
Saunders started his interest in bowling several years ago by being a pin-setter.
He has won three 180 average tournaments; bowled a pair of 267 games and two 700 series; served the Hits and Misses League three years as sergeant at arms, four as vice president and 10 as president.
Wayne is married to Ruth. They have a daughter Stacie Bobeck and a stepson, Charley Cripe.
Debbie Brown
Debbie is an inductee due to her dedication to the Hall of Fame committee, serving as photographer all 12 years.
She started bowling in junior leagues at Maple City in 1965, competing in local and state tournaments.
While bowling in the local high school league, she earned the nickname “Twinkle Toes” for the numerous steps on her approach.
As an adult, Debbie bowled in the Nite Owl and several other leagues. She was forced to give up bowling in 1987 due to a back injury.
Debbie is married to Joe and they have three children — Wayne, Cindy and Stephanie — and eight grandchildren.
Anne Babcock
Anne started bowling in Kansas City, moving to the Goshen area about 24 years ago.
She served on the Goshen Women’s Bowling Association board of directors and has bowled in several leagues, but is now only participating in the Wednesday Morning Coffee.
Anne posted a high game of 298 and a best series of 712. She has participated in the city tournament 24 years, the state 15 and a national event in Quad Cities, Iowa.
Anne is married to Michael. They have two daughters — Kim and Tricia — and three grandchildren.
