Falcons clipped by CMA

BENTON, Ind Missed opportunities led to Fairfield’s second loss of the season Friday night, a 38-28 defeat at the hands of Culver Military Academy.

None of the missed chances loomed larger than the one at the start of the fourth quarter.

The Falcons trailed 31-21 and a punt at the end of the third quarter pinned CMA inside its 5.

Fairfield’s defense held and forced the Eagles to punt from their 2.

After the run back, the Falcons had the ball at the CMA 24.

But Fairfield quarterback Chase Pinion’s pass was intercepted in the end zone. Two plays later the Eagles’ Josh Wright threw an 85-yard scoring strike to Juwan Brescacin for a 17-point advantage.

“We had opportunities against a good team but we didn’t convert on them,” Falcon coach Bob Miller said.

Fairfield mounted an impressive drive at the end of the game that resulted in a touchdown to cut the lead to 10. They then recovered the onside kick, but had only 19 seconds remaining and time ran out on them.

Pinion threw for three touchdown passes and ran for another to lead the Falcons. He completed 15 of 30 passes for 242 yards.

Most of the scoring action came in the first quarter with Culver scoring three times and Fairfield twice to make it 21-14 going into the second quarter.

Miller said his defense played both overaggressive at times and passive at times, much like they had against Lakeland in their other loss.

“We overran things and were out of position, but we also sat and waited and didn’t attack,” he said. “You can’t do that against the wing-T offense.”
