Fair runners just ‘chipper’

By GREG KEIM

Score one for technology.

The 27th annual Parade 5,000 went off Sunday with hardly a hitch, thanks in large part to computer chip technology which accurately recorded a runner’s finishing time and place.

A grand total of 348 runners completed the race which takes place prior to the Elkhart County 4-H Parade along the streets of Goshen.

“The chips worked,” race director Rick Clark said. “There is a little bit more preparation work which needs to be done before hand, but the results were ready shortly after the race ended.”

Don Landis of Churubusco was in charge of the timing system and Don Linley of the Fort Wayne Track Club brought a large digital clock for the finish line.

“This was our second largest year ever,” Clark added. “We didn’t have people at the finish line worrying about keeping runners in the proper order.

“I’m pleased with how it went.”

The weather even cooperated as cloud cover kept the runners from getting too warm.

“We lucked out on the weather,” Clark said. “On an afternoon day in the middle of July you run the risk of a scorcher.”

Former Goshen College standout Justin Gillette repeated as the men’s overall champion. He finished the race in 15:49.85.

“It feels pretty good to win again,” Gillette said.

Justin’s wife (Melissa) said, “He should thank me for making him run.”

Former Goshen High School runner Jacob Shelly was second (15:56.24), Mario Camilo of Goshen third (15:59.02) and former Westview High School star Nate Jones fourth (16:03.13).

Gillette likes running along the Parade route.

“It’s kind of neat with all the people cheering,” he said. “But a lot of them were calling me by my brother’s name (Jake).”

Justin and his wife recently returned from running a marathon in Hawaii.

“This is a lot different than running a marathon,” he said. “In a marathon you don’t run all out, hoping for other runners to fall off the pace. Here, you have to go all out from the start.”

Justin finished first and his wife placed fifth in the marathon.

“If you think this weather is tough go to Hawaii,” he said. “We ran at 5:30 in the morning and it was already 80 degrees and humid.”

Former GHS cross country and track standout Kristina Trcka was the women’s overall winner in 18:36.43.

Trcka was on the women’s cross country team at Indiana University last fall. She recorded her top finish with a 20th (19:17 for 5,000 meters) in the Indiana Open.

Melissa Gillette was second in the women’s race (18:54.94).

Marty Hile from Greenville, South Carolina, gets the long-distance award. He placed 10th in the male age 40-44 category.
