Jon Everingham named DeKalb basketball coach

Jon Everingham, 1994 Goshen High School graduate, is the new head coach of boys basketball at DeKalb in Waterloo.

Everingham played for the GHS Redskins under the coaching of the late Mike Sorrell. He led the team in scoring as a senior with 291 points, connecting 34 times from 3-point range.

Everingham was then an assistant coach in the Redskin program for several years, also serving as head coach in the golf program.

Two years ago, he took a job as head coach of boys basketball at Argos High School in Marshall County where New Paris native Phil Weybright had a great run as coach for many seasons.

At DeKalb, he succeeds Joe Bradburn who resigned to become head coach at Huntington North.

“I’m not sure where home is right now, but eventually it will be Auburn,” said Everingham by telephone as he was driving back to Argos from DeKalb on Thursday night.

“I didn’t pursue the DeKalb job because our family had just moved across town in Argos and we were happy there.”

Jon and wife Carly (Beer) have twin sons Myles and Maddux who are 2 1/2 and another son Davis who is 1.

“I got a call from Ron Kock (athletic director at DeKalb) and things have been on a fast track since. We went up there for an interview, enjoyed our conversation and just fell in love with both the school and community.

“The DeKalb school board approved it Tuesday, I told my Argos players Wednesday, then met the DeKalb players and coaches today.

“I will always be grateful to Argos for the opportunity to be their coach. Expectations were low, but we got lucky and had some good ball-handlers.

“We won 11 games the first season and then went 15-6 last season. They have four starters returning and we had pretty much decided we were going to stay there.

“Anywhere you go in coaching it is going to be a challenge these days. The tough part here is getting the job so late. They have had their summer program and we will have only two weeks of practice before the season starts.
