Fairfield overpowers LaVille, 14-2

Gary Kauffman — Justin Scott's three-run homer off the scoreboard in leftfield Monday night capped a 14-2 Fairfield win over LaVille in the semi-final of the Westview 2A Sectional.

The win puts the Falcons in the championship against Westview, slated for 5 p.m. today.

Fairfield had 12 hits, including four doubles, a triple and a homer. Caleb Yoder belted a double and triple to drive in three runs.

After bursting out of the gate with a five-run first inning, the Falcons scored just one more over the next three innings. But in the fifth, Fairfield scored eight runs with one out, the final three on Scott's blast, to win by the 10-run rule.

"In the first inning we got off to a good start, but then (pitcher Glenn Halasz) had us baffled," Falcon coach Brodie Garber said.

Meanwhile, Falcon pitcher Derrick Troeger limited the Lancers to just two hits, both in the first inning. He struck out six in five innings.

“He went right after it and pounded the strike zone," Garber said. "He did a nice job."

Troeger had a spate of wildness in the second inning when he walked a batter and hit another. They both advanced on a wild pitch. One run scored on a passed ball and another on a wild pitch.

After the second inning, LaVille had just one more baserunner and he was gunned down by catcher Jordan Bontrager trying to steal.

The Falcons scored five runs in the first before making an out. Brad Newcomer drove home the first with an infield single, and Yoder brought in two more with a double. A single by Zach Newcomer and a double by Kyle Cross accounted for the other two runs.

Fairfield went out in order in the second and third, and plated one more run in the fourth on an error by the leftfielder.

In the fifth, Yoder's triple scored Brad Newcomer and Yoder scored on Zach Newcomer's single. Bontrager smashed a double to bring home two more. Darin Hochstetler doubled in a run to make it 11-2 before Scott ended the game with his homer.

The Falcon win coupled with Westview's win over Bremen sets up the championship contest many area fans had hoped to see. Westview won the regular season meeting of the clubs, 5-2.

"With these two teams you've got to expect a well-played ball game," Garber said. "We wouldn't have it any other way. We have a lot of respect for them and I'm sure they do for us."
