It was a great night for the Fairfield High School boys track and field team as the Falcons finished second to the Elkhart Memorial Crimson Chargers in the IHSAA sectional Thursday at Foreman Field in Goshen.
Memorial, led by senior double winner Devington Halliburton, captured its seventh consecutive team championship with 122 points.
Fairfield was next at 97.5, followed by Northridge 87, Concord 61, Warsaw 58, Elkhart Central 54, NorthWood 50, Wawasee 49.5, Goshen 41 and Jimtown 3.
Halliburton finished first in the 110 high hurdles (14.60) and 300-meter intermediate hurdles (38.69).
“Seven in a row is quite an accomplishment,” Memorial coach Adam Homo said. “The only other school to do that was Elkhart (before being split into Central and Memorial).”
The top four finishers in each event advance to next Thursday’s regional at Kokomo.
Fairfield was paced by senior Alex Korenstra and freshman Tanner Foust who both qualified in three events.
Korenstra was second in the 400 (49.41), third in the 200 (22.50) and high jump (6-1). Foust was fourth in long jump (21-1), fourth in high jump (6-0) and was on the third-place 4 x 100 relay (42.79).
Others were seniors Trevor Concord, Tyler Gangloff and junior Alic Vanover.
“A lot of the kids are disappointed after the great season we had, but I am proud of these kids,” Falcon coach Bob Miller said. “They competed hard and gave everything they had in field events and on the track.
“Korenstra has been one of our senior leaders all season and it looks good for the future taking Foust to regional in three events.”
Northridge was led by double winner senior Ladd Mercer 800 (1:59.42) and 1,600 (4:18.49).
“We had to give Ladd one shot at all-out 1,600 before state,” Northridge coach Ryan McClane said. “We figure he needs to be around 4:15 at state and he was close.”
Northridge junior Seth Virgil won long jump (22-11 1/4).
“It was a god night for us,” McClane said. “The guys we expected to showed up and performed. Romine had some good throws in shot put (second at 52-6). Junior Tony Bontrager (fourth in the 1,600 in 4:35.88) and senior Tony Yoder (third in the 3,200 in 10:03.72) were a couple of guys that we were not really expecting to get out.”
Concord senior Anthony Harper won the 100 (10.92) and 200 (22.12).
The Goshen Redskin foursome of juniors Carmelo Castillo, Cameron Miller, freshman Tyler Wynn and senior Michael Murto took the 4 x 800 relay (8:06.31).
Murto also moves on in the 800 (fourth in 2:00.44), Miller in the 1,600 (third in 4:35.66) and Wynn in the 3,200 (fourth in 10:04.05).
“It was a great night for Northern Lakes Conference teams and for Fairfield,” Goshen coach Brock Maust said. “We can look at Memorial’s program and see where we want to be.
“It was an exceptional night for the 4 x 800 and we take a lot of pride in that. All the regional qualifiers did a great job.”
The evening’s only record was in the 400 as Wawasee senior Eric Brown (48.90) edged Korenstra (49.41).
“Alex and I are good friends.” Brown said. “I would rather run against a friend than anyone else. We push each other. We both attend Nappanee Missionary Church and we talk about races even at church.”
NorthWood might have had one of the night’s bigger disappointments when sophomore Kyle Yoder went down in the 4 x 100 relay with what appeared to be a hamstring injury.
“It’s a shame when something like that happens on a relay you are grooming to make a run at the state meet,” NorthWood coach Adam Yoder said. “You feel badly for seniors like Kent Biller and Alex Rethlake who will not see the reward for all their hard work.”
