Wawasee captures NLC showdown from

When three local high school boys golf teams with one loss among them clashed Thursday at McCormick Creek Golf Course in Nappanee, something had to give.

The Wawasee Warriors entered the match with the loss, but ended up handing both the Northridge Raiders and NorthWood Panthers their first defeats of the season.

Junior Curtis Coverstone carded a 1-under par 35 as Wawasee posted a team score of 150 on the course’s 2,886-yard back nine.

Freshman Andy Morrison fired a 36 as Northridge totaled 154 and senior Eric Hartstein a 35 as NorthWood finished with a 158.

“This was a huge week for us,” Wawasee coach Steve Coverstone said. “We squeaked by Warsaw (149-153 on Tuesday) and now we came away with wins against two of the better teams in the conference here.

“Curtis (Coverstone) did a great job. He missed a short putt on No. 18 and put a ball in the water on another hole.”

Northridge coach Dennis Sienicki said, “Our score was acceptable. I was hoping we could have been a few strokes lower, but we might have been low enough to beat Wawasee. We have not all come together on the same day. We have not had four guys under 40 and when that happens we are going to be a pretty good team.

“Morrison had nine pars. He hit a lot of greens and made some putts. He was pretty sharp from tee to green.”

NorthWood coach Brad Duerksen said, “It’s kind of disappointing. I was hoping we could come out of this with a split, but we have been struggling with that third and fourth score. Losing by no means ends our season. These were two of the tougher teams in the NLC.

“It’s good to see Eric (Hartstein) coming around. He moved to a long handled putter early this season and is now back to a shorter one. His putting stroke is coming back. He is hitting the ball off the tee extremely well.”

Senior Jordan Dawes added a 36, junior Michael Jenkins 38, senior Rees Woodcock 41 and sophomore John Kirkwood 43 for Wawasee.

“We threw out a 43,” Coverstone said. “That is one of the things about this team. We don’t have a lot of bad scores.

“Dawes missed a three-foot put for an eagle and Jenkins four-putted a hole and still shot 38. Kirkwood didn’t have one of his better nights, but those things happen in golf.”

Also for Northridge, senior Nathan Smith had 37, senior Zac Henderson 40, sophomore Collin Roberts 41 and freshman David Long 42.

“Smith had a good score like he has had our last couple matches,” Sienicki said. “Zac (Henderson) was a little off.

“We are about where I would like to be at this point of the season. You don’t want to peak too early and not be ready to play in the tournament. That is one of the reasons why I am scared to death to put too much emphasis on some of these NLC matches.”

Junior Austen Burkholder had added 38 for NorthWood, junior Brady Klotz 41, senior Jordan Taylor 44 and senior Todd Anglemyer 48.

“We are about where I thought we would be,” Duerksen said. “Except I would like to see some consistency in our fourth and fifth spots. But we have made strides.”
