Lady Redskins tennis team gets spark from seniors

— Seniors Katrina Miller and Katie Van Klaveren set a positive tone Tuesday for the Goshen High School girls tennis team.
They scored quick victories in the top two singles positions, boosting the Lady Redskins to a 4-1 Northern Lakes Conference win over NorthWood on the Goshen Middle School courts.
Miller won her match 6-3, 6-0 and Van Klaveren was a 6-3, 6-1 winner.
Junior Ellie Berry took a little more time at No. 3, but she completed a Redskin singles sweep by winning 6-3, 7-6 (5).
Freshman Anika Baumgartner and sophomore Mackenzie Rozelle of Goshen won 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 at No. 2 doubles.
NorthWood’s team point came at No. 1 singles from juniors Alli Heeter and Jill Focht who prevailed 6-4, 6-3.
Redskin coach Scott Miller said, “It was actually a very close match. We got off to a good start and it was good to get this one after a tough loss to Northridge.
“Both Katrina Miller at No. 1 singles and Katie Van Klaveren at No. 2 kept the ball in play and their shot selection was excellent.
“Ellie Berry stuck it out in her match. Courtney Simpson (NorthWood junior) just wasn’t missing many shots. Ellie’s used to matches like that.
“We played a lot of matches early in the season, then had some postponements and spring break so the schedule has been somewhat sporadic.
“This is a good week for us to get in a groove because we host Concord on Thursday and then have four matches next week.”
