Goshen has new firefighter

GOSHEN — The Goshen Board of Public Works and Safety approved the hiring of a new probationary firefighter for the Goshen Fire Department during its weekly session held Monday.

During Monday’s meeting, Goshen Fire Chief Dan Sink went before the board to recommend the hiring of Garrett Sheline on a probationary basis.

“I am requesting permission to hire Garrett Sheline as a probationary firefighter effective Oct. 29, 2013,” Sink said. “Garrett has met all the requirements sent by PERF (Public Employee Retirement Fund) and I feel he will be an outstanding addition to our department.”

The board approved this recommendation, and Sheline was sworn in by Goshen Clerk-Treasurer Tina Bontrager.

Other business

In other business, the board:

• Approved a change order closing out the 23rd Street sanitary sewer extension project. The change reduces the contract price by $4,255, or approximately 15 percent.

• Approved the post-construction plan for Lot 9 of Century Drive Industrial Park Phase 2.

• Tabled a request by Downtown Goshen Inc. and Salon J, 130 S. Main St., Goshen, to close the alley behind the salon’s building during the November First Friday’s event for a party celebrating the salon’s five-year anniversary. The decision was made to table the request until the board’s next meeting in order to give the salon staff time to notify nearby neighbors and seek their approval for the closure.
