Fire destroys garage, van in New Paris

NEW PARIS — Fire destroyed a garage and a vehicle at a New Paris home this morning.

According to New Paris Fire Chief Joe Warstler, fire crews got the call around 9 a.m. Monday after a resident of the home, located at 20077 Regina Road, noticed smoke and fire coming from the garage area of the house.

“Fire units arrived on scene shortly after the call, and we immediately saw smoke coming from the home and heavy fire in the garage,” Warstler said from the scene this afternoon. “We called Foraker (firefighters) right away for assistance and immediately got crews on scene to start battling the fire.”

Kenneth Jones, the home’s owner, said he had already arrived at work at around 9 a.m. when he received word from his wife that the house was on fire.

“My wife and my two little boys, one’s 4 years old and one’s six months old, they were all in the house at the time,” Jones said. “She said she went out because she heard the garage door going up and down, and said she opened the door and saw flames. The kids were still sleeping at the time, so she grabbed them and went to a neighbor’s house.”

Jones said the fire crews were able to contain a majority of the fire damage to the garage area of the house, though there will likely be significant smoke and heat damage throughout the building.

“There’s tons of smoke damage,” Jones said. “The smoke went throughout the house, so there’s going to be a lot of smoke damage. There’s not a lot of physical damage in the living room or the bedrooms, but the kitchen and the garage obviously looks like it’s going to be a total loss.”

The family’s van, which had been purchased just five months before, was also destroyed in the blaze.
