Palm Sunday tornadoes to be remembered at museum

BRISTOL — The Elkhart County Historical Museum will be hosting a “Palm Sunday Tornado Remembrance” event at1 p.m. Sunday.

This year will mark the 48th year since a string of tornadoes struck the Midwest in 1965. Four confirmed tornadoes touched down in Elkhart County that led to the death of 62 people and thousands of dollars in damage.

Admission to the museum  event is free.

This year’s program will focus on the recovery efforts that took place after the tornadoes swept through the area.

Staff at the museum will present stories and photos of what was done to clean up the damage and comfort those who had lost something on that day.

Executive Director of the Elkhart County Red Cross Frank Connelly and other Red Cross volunteers will be on hand to discuss how a disaster response would be organized if an event like the Palm Sunday tornadoes were to happen today.

“The Palm Sunday Tornadoes, while occurring many decades ago, hold a firm place in the memory of many residents of this community,” said curator of education Patrick McGuire. “What is especially impressive was the way the community responded and rebuilt after the event, and we are excited to share that history with the public,” McGuire added.

There will be a collection taken for the Red Cross at the event.
