Goshen College graduates 261

GOSHEN — For the Goshen College class of 2013, four years of work and study came to a culmination with the 115th commencement ceremony Sunday at the college.

National Public Radio food and agriculture correspondent Daniel Charles spoke about finding and developing real relationships in a virtual world.

“The job of all of us is to search for the best, most truly useful information and understanding what we can,” he told graduates.

He encouraged students to seek out quality communication, to not be lost in technologies, such as tablets, cell phones and computers.

“How real is the version of the world you’re going to encounter on that screen,” he said. He told students to keep with them the values of the college and the religion which founded it.

“Humility, honesty, community; these are values to live by, even today, especially today,” he said.

Millicent Morros, a class of 2013 member who was murdered in downtown Goshen earlier this year, was awarded her degree posthumously and a moment of silence was observed in her honor.

The Goshen College class of 2013 consisted of 261 undergraduates from 20 countries and 26 states, according to college officials. There were also 16 students who earned master’s degrees.

After the ceremony in the Roman Gingrich Recreation Center, graduates and their families exchanged hugs and greetings outside. In poignant reminders that their years at GC were ending, many classmates embraced and said their farewells.
