CIRCUIT COURT: Guilty plea in double homicide entered

GOSHEN — An Elkhart man has pleaded guilty but mentally ill in a double slaying last year.

In Elkhart Circuit Court Thursday, Kevin Moore, 29, entered guilty pleas to two counts of felony murder. He admitted that he shot and killed Jagtar Singh Bhatti, 55, and Pawan Singh, 20, during a Sept. 5 robbery at Saleh’s Market, 401 Middlebury St.

Moore’s sentence will be left to the judge’s discretion. He faces a maximum term of 130 years.

Moore will begin his sentence with the Indiana Department of Mental Health. After staffers there determine that Moore’s mental health issues have been addressed, he will be transferred to the Indiana Department of Correction.

In court Thursday, Moore indicated that at the time of the slayings he was impaired by post-traumatic stress disorder, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.

Responding to a question from Deputy Prosecutor David Francisco, Moore indicated his is able to distinguish right from wrong and was able to on Sept. 5.

A co-defendant in the case, Richard Gross, 23, pleaded guilty to murder charges in December on the day his trial was due to begin. He, too, faces a maximum 130-year prison sentence.
