THE GOSHEN NEWS
---- — Indiana State Police said Tuesday their investigation into the double murder at an Elkhart Martin’s Super Market and the police shooting of the suspect is continuing.
Spokesman Sgt. Trent Smith answered requests for information from the media, including The Goshen News, saying, “The state police are unable to comment on a suspected motive of the shooter, Shawn Bair, or any relationship that may or may not have existed between Bair, his victims and Martin’s Super Market.”
Bair shot 20-year-old Krystle Dikes, a Martin’s employee, and 44-year-old customer Rachelle Godfread Jan. 15. He also fired shots at another Martin’s employee but missed. According to police, Bair was holding the store’s manager at gunpoint and taunting him when two Elkhart officers arrived and distracted him. Police killed Bair with gunshots within minutes of arriving.
According to Smith, the Indiana State Police has received several Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests for copies of the in-store video and 911 tapes relating to the shooting. Smith said State Police are not releasing either, as they are part of an ongoing investigation.
Smith also told media representatives not to expect any more information to be released prior to the conclusion of the investigation.
“Media should not expect another update in the case until the investigation has been completed and reviewed by the Elkhart County Prosecutor’s Office,” Smith said. “At this time state police are unable to predict a timeline for when that might happen.”
A funeral service for Godfread was scheduled to take place Tuesday at Walley-Mills-Zimmerman Funeral Home in Elkhart. Services for Dikes are set for 11 a.m. today at First Baptist Church in Bristol.
A visitation for Bair had been scheduled for Monday at Walley-Mills-Zimmerman Funeral Home.
