Fair queen has long history of 4-H participation

GOSHEN —  Sierra Walter capped a 10-year 4-H career Friday night by being chosen the queen for this year’s fair.

“It’s a dream come true. On my 10th year, it’s an honor to be queen,” Walter of Goshen said. “I can show people to challenge yourself like I did with my cystic fibrosis. I honestly don’t know what to look forward to (being queen during fair week). I will have fun and take what I can get.”

Her question for the impromptu question was about what she knew to be true?

“My faith. It is the reason I am here today,” Walter said.

As she sat in a folding chair taking photos and receiving congratulations afterwards, the new queen was asked about her response to the question.

“I was a nervous wreck, but I was told to make it (the answer) short and to the point,” Walter said, smiling.

After the contest, her plans for rest of the evening included certain necessities.

“I have to do chores,” she said.

And she’ll be busy this week showing her 23 goats, a beef heifer and steer and two horses, this in addition to her duties as queen for rest of the week.

Her court includes first runner-up Taylor Poling of Mishawaka; second runner-up Morgan Kerrn of Elkhart; third runner-up Sarah Kezar of New Paris; fourth runner-up Marissa Lorenz of New Paris; and Miss Congeniality, Allie Herkenroder of Elkhart.
