Fair ramps up with 4-H project check-in

GOSHEN — The Elkhart County Fair begins Friday and 4-H'ers went to the fairgrounds Monday to check in nearly 4,500 projects for judging.

Monday marked the day 4-H participants could drop off many of their projects for judging, including crafts, models, photography and others.

According to Laurie Sula, extension educator for 4-H/youth,  projects turned in Monday have "closed judging," meaning that participants will only receive a comment sheet from the judges at the fair.

Last week was the "open judging" projects, including the food categories, where the judges actually sit and review the project with the child.

Later this week there will be more open judging in cake decorating and certain floral categories. Sula said livestock will begin arriving for the fair late in the week.

Around 4,500 projects were expected to be  turned in Monday, Sula said.
