On your mark, get set — go green.
The Green Day Frolic is the theme of this week’s First Fridays festival in downtown Goshen. This month’s event will include a 5k run and 2k walk.
“When we started (the Frolic) originally, we had a focus primarily on environmental sustainability and the ways in which downtown businesses engage in environmental sustainability, and that continues to be a component of the event,” said Gina Leichty, director of First Fridays promoter Downtown Goshen Inc. “But we’ve added the athletic component to the event as well. People like to get outside and start enjoying the spring weather that supposedly is coming. And so we do both during the Green Day Frolic. ...It’s a nice opportunity for Goshen to reflect both its concern for the outdoors and enjoyment and optimism about the possibility of it actually being warm.”
Day-of-event registration, race packet pick-up and the finish line will all be at the millrace powerhouse, 212 W. Washington St. The starting line for both the race and the walk will be on Lincoln Avenue between Third and Main streets on the south side of the Elkhart County Courthouse.
Registration and check-in will take place at the powerhouse from 4:45 to 5:45 p.m., followed by a pre-race meeting at the starting line at 5:50 p.m. The 5k run will begin at 6 p.m., followed by the 2K walk at 6:10. An awards ceremony is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the powerhouse. There will be prizes for top three males and top three females in each of the seven age categories.
Registration on the day of the Frolic costs $25, with a $10 student rate. Event organizers said participants will be charged a $10 fee for lost or damaged timing chips.
Runners in the 5K will head south on Main Street, turn right onto Washington Street and proceed south on the millrace trail. Participants will turn around on Waverly Avenue and run back north to the finish at the powerhouse.
